Thomas Newman is one of the most interesting composers currently working. While there are definite styles that he composes in, his creativity and compositional skill keep his scores from ever getting too familiar.

I decided that I would try to create a portrait of his musical output. I originally intended to make a single disc, but when going through the material to compile it, I realized there was no way that one CD could encompass the scope of his talent.

What follows is the track listing for the three-disc set I ended up with. Despite the fact that there are some scores which I wished I had room to include (such as Up Close and Personal or The Linguini Incident), I am very satisfied with the results not only as an overview of his work, but also as listening experiences.

I compiled "Ghosts" first. This was perhaps the easiest to put together as I had a pretty definite shape. I wanted to convey a sense of stillness that Newman creates so well.

"Bittersweet" was the next disc I put together. This is the one that I wrestled with the most in terms of what gets on the disc and what doesn't.

"Kinky" turned out to be the most fun to create. Newman's music can get so... well... weird, and I felt that in order to sustain interest throughout the whole thing I had to carefully structure the piece.

Another primary concern for all three discs was that the tracks flow together. This is something that Newman does with his albums, and I felt that it was a sound policy, given the nature of the music. I therefore worked very hard to get the crossfades just right. In many cases, it is difficult to tell where one track ends and the next begins.

I am very proud of these, and am looking forward to hearing what people think of these listings...

Great idea to divide T. Newm into separate styles. Personally I prefer his "bittersweet" mode. Even such short phrases as Technically a Woman from Erin Brockovich just seem to say something intangible and profound about the human condition. Others to your third category that I would add:

Whispers in the Dark - Main Title
Phenomenon - Portuguese Angel + others
Pay It Forward - Wasted Air
Flesh and Blood - Bruise
Little Women - Valley of the Shadow + others
Less Than Zero and Men Don't Leave contain some of the most sublime Newman tracks but they are unnamed on the promo CDs I have

Glad to hear there are other Thomas Newman proponents out there! Nice job on your CDs!

Nothing from before 1991 on the 3CD?? A lost opportunity in my book.

Josh, allow me to express my admiration for what you've done here. As a fellow Thomas Newman fan (54 titles and counting), these look brilliant to me! Love the idea of compiling these thematically.

That said, the fact that you were able to place 48 tracks on the first CD (and in the 30's on the other two) belies the one problem I have with Newman: the almost complete lack of any long form pieces. Nearly everything he's done runs from 30 seconds to under 2 minutes. It's a bit like trying to make a meal of hors d'oeuvres!

And nothing from 'Josh and S.A.M.'? To say nothing of Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Skyfall, and Wall-E! Well, I guess there's always Disc 4!

Well, the original post is from 2004............. :-D

But I agree about the problem with short cues.

At the time I compiled this, not much of Newman's earlier work was available. Much of it still isn't. And I was limiting myself to what was commercially available.

As for the short cues, part of what I was doing here was blending similar-sounding cues into one another so that they would sound like one long piece with movements.

These discs are old, and pretty primitive compared to what I could do with this concept today. I do not have plans to revisit this project anytime soon, and I am not sure where the masters I put together for this set are (I've moved a couple of times in the past ten years).

Well, there are actually quite a few things available from that period, including tracks from

Desperately Seeking Susan
Amazing Stories (although maybe not in 2004)
Gung Ho
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Light Of Day
The Lost Boys
The Great Outdoors
Cookie

What? Why am I being grilled about a mix I made ten years ago?

I'm not grilling. I'm giving you recommendations.

Geez...

None of them are really very good though. Newman didn't really start coming into his own until 1991 or 1992, with things like FRIED GREEN TOMATOES and WHISPERS IN THE DARK.

LOL!!!

Newman in the 80s was highly interesting and original. I think he started to become less revolutionary in the early 90s.

We are really on different planets here.
