I have been meaning to pose this question for a long time; this seems as good a time as any.

The Varese release of OUR MAN FLINT/IN LIKE FLINT was a cause for celebration a few years back. As the owner of these scores on mono lp's I was happy to have these inventive, energetic scores in stereo. Plus, they contained music not on the original albums.

However, OMF left off one of my favorite tracks, "Doing As the Romans Do". This piece is a lovely, lyrical, exotic piece. Written for small ensemble, it stands out from the rest of the score . What is particularly frustrating is the fact that most of the score, INCLUDING THE BONUS TRACKS, mainly consists of variations on the main theme!

Ford? Lukas? Anyone?

Bruce Marshall

P.S. If you have never heard Goldsmith's inspired rendering of the Russian folk melody "Meadowland"
contained on IN LIKE FLINT, you haven't lived!

Um, Ok... so, ah, what's your question? confused

Your post reads like more of a statement - "One of my favorite tracks was left off!" - than an actual question. Are you asking "what happened to it?," or "is it available elsewhere?," or what?

Why was it left off when they had room for repetitive material that was not even on the original albums?
How's that?

First of all, those old LP's of the
FLINT scores are not the original soundtrack
recordings. They were re-recordings
performed by an entirely different
orchestra - reorchestrated with different
arrangements by Goldsmith. The Varese cd
of the FLINT scores are the original
soundtracks, as heard in the film.
The piece of music you speak of, may
have been something that Goldsmith
composed just for that LP.

I beleave hes talking about the scene in Our Man Flint when Flint is roaming around Galaxy Island just before hes attacked by the Eagle.
I have it on a bootleg with that terrable T name , sorry Lucas , I didnt know .
The boot has the recordings of the 2 lps.
not sure why it wasnt on the Varese one, and I have that one as well.

The additional music is definitely from the ost used in the film.
A track composed by Goldsmith and Randy Newman that appears on the album but was not used in the film was left off also.

I was going to title this thread ....missing trackS, but wanted to keep it short.

Yes, you are correct. That track "All I Have to Do is take a Bite of Your Apple?", was left off the cd also. Another lyrical piece that doesn't
repeat the "Flint" theme
"Doing As the Romans Do" is the scene in the Pleasure Room were a mock Roman orgy is taking place.

So, Varese left off three tracks from the album,
two of which appeared in the film and give a much needed respite from the endless variations on the
main theme.

I am not a happy camper, Varese!

I missed those tracks myself and wondered why in the sake of all the completeness we have today with classic scores that tracks that are not repeated anywhere else in the score can get lost?

The only answer to it is to hang on to that vinyl.

The Flints have always been amongst my favourite scores, there is still quite a bit missing from both scores on the Varese CD, this isn’t a complaint because if you listen hard to the cd you will hear it sounded as if it needed a lot of work to make what they released sound good. If you listen to tracks like 27-“It’s Gotta Be A World’s Record” then it’s struggling a bit on the last 40seconds or so. My fear is the other cues may be damaged or missing(which happens a lot these days!), or may only exist in mono(but I’d live with that even) Still the Varese cd is one I treasure enormously.

Some nice musical highlights I would like to see released from Our Man Flint is indeed the movie version of “All I have to Do Is Take A Bite Of Your Apple”.
French nightclub sequence music where Flint fights 0008 etc, quite a long piece that one.
The action music where the eagle attacks Flint, and the action music when Flint fights Malcolm Rodney.
The groovy disco music where Flint dances, Varese included the Boilermaker but it doesn’t appear in the movie.

From IN LIKE FLINT definitely the movie version of No Rest For The Weary, but at the top of the list must be the music where Flint fights Gen.Carter inside the space capsule(although some of the music sounds like a lift from the Flint v Rodney fight in Our Man).

I have 2 old LPs of the “score” versions, I like the arrangements. Silva Screen UK did an extremely very limited cd release of these(probably worth an absolute fortune now), the masters were flawless, absolutey crisp. Silva also issued both scores on a single LP as well, all I have is the cassette version, which is crystal clear, well worth checking ebay for these, coz I have seen them being offered. At the same time 20th Century Fox Records in Japan re-released the 2 LPs as well, from the same masters.
The Tsunami rubbish sounds like a reel to reel tape transfer, lots of errors on the Our Man score, dropout etc, In Like Flint is ok though.
For years I have also been after the double Japanese Laserdisc of Our Man/In Like, has anybody ever seen that anywhere?

Any other thoughts, suggestions anyone? Stevie

The naughty CD also had that hilarious presidential phone ring. I once heard that Goldsmith supplied that sound. Is it true?

Yes indeed.

It's credited to him at the end of HUDSON HAWK, they used it as well.

The only things about the VARESE release that disapponted me was that this was not included and that the Big action cue for the end of both films was not included.

Oh well, that's life.

I can't lay my hands on the Compilation CD in question at the moment (ie 'The Best of Hugo Montenegro CAMDEN label, UK 2000), but didn't Hugo Montenegro's version of OUR MAN FLINT include that (admittedly very funny) presidential telephone ring?

I didn't know that Goldsmith supplied that! I do know that whenever those Flint films come up in conversation, someone inevitably mentions that 'zany phone ring'.... smile

The reason AUSTIN POWERS couldn't use it note for note, is because it is indeed a copyrighted piece of music by JG.

Stevie, why do you prefer the movie version of "No rest..."
Is it so different?
?

I say this with my head ducked down but I love that to, I have the naughty cd, and I guess with the 2 cd releases you get pretty much what there is in music.
at least thats something, Ive loved the Flint movies and music for many years and still do, great stuff.

I just realized something: younger audiences wont get the joke.
After all, modern day cell phones play everything from EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIC to pop tunes!

Brucer- "No Rest For The Weary" has a much more over-stated twangy guitar(if you have the dvd check it out)

Ford-yep that final fight music between Flint & Gen.Carter is the one I'd like most to hear as well. Isn't part of it borrowed from Our Man Flint(Flint v Rodney fight)?

"Doing As The Romans Did"-someone mentioned this wasn't on the Varese Cd, because of space limitations on the cd and the fact the LP version is very close to the movie take, I think Varese wisely left it off in lieu of a previously un-released track(I presume?).

RE-the phone, isn't it the the same one that Commissioner Gordon uses in Batman?

SEBASTIAN soundtrack gets played a lot in my house too!

Hmm, well, my copy of the CD clocks in at only 65 minutes. Seems like there would have been room for a couple of two minutes cues. Unless you are saying that 65 minutes is all that a CD can handle?
