I just watch this Burt Reynolds movie. The film itself isn´t very good (at times it is unintionally funny) and featured a really bad performance from Rachel Ward.
But I like the music which style is reminds me a little bit of Dee Barton or Jerry Fielding´s The Gauntlet. I mean, it´s not a masterpiece, but nice to listen to (at least in the movie).
I looked at imdb to find out who was the composer but they listet only Al Capps as arranger and conductor. Was score based upon pre-existing music, used they stock music or was the music really from Capps?
I have the old LP and from what I recall it's mostly (90%) songs.I do remember liking that score, in particular the murder of the blind prostitute.Henry Silva was freaky in that flick with the yelling and the shooting and the what-not.
I love this movie. Very underrated and it had an excellent use of songs and pre exsisting jazz music from Chet Baker and others. I think i'll watch that on DVD. If only there was a widescreen edition of the film. I really hate pan and scan, it's horrible.
I like the suspense moments whicht remind me of the work of Lalo Schifrin or Billy Goldenberg with it´s use of a water chime. Were this cues by Capps?
But the film is just terrible. Some actors were good (like Earl Holliman and Charles Durning) others like Henry Silva and Rachel Ward gave some of their worst performances of their entire career. And the romantic scenes between Reynolds and Ward are really painful.
Doc Severinson is credited with the original score (at least on the soundtrack cassette I have). He was the band leader for the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
And I also wish there was a widescreen DVD of this film. I think it's one of Burt Reynolds best films actually.

SHARKY'S MACHINE has no single credited composer of which I am aware. It's entirely a compilation score as far as I know. Doc Severinson performed on two instrumental cues ("High Energy" and "Sexercise") that were used on the soundtrack. These and a few other instrumental cues were written by various composers, as were the multitude of vocals.
The original Warner Bros. LP has never been legitimately issued on CD--until now. Varese Sarabande has it scheduled for a February 18th release.

It's shaping up to be a good year for Burt and SHARKY, as the film--one of Burt's very best--is said to be coming to Blu-ray from Warner Bros. The Blu-ray, surprisingly, will be released by WHV, not the Warner Archive, as one might expect.

That's good news. Sharky's Machine is probably the last of the great Burt Reynolds films in his career. Well directed by him too. I had this soundtrack on cassette years ago and the music is to die for. A good buy.
