You know, I actually like this CD much more than I had anticipated when I bought it some months ago.

As I was listening to it last night, I was struck by how well it flowed - from the songs to the score and back again, with interesting electronic textures throughout. My favourite part is no doubt the groovy Peter Gabriel song (both versions), while my least favourite part is the tracks with a female vocalist wailing eastern sounds. They just remind me too much of cheap "Mood" CD's. But they're ear-pleasing, by all means.

I have to agree, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this album as well, seeing as I bought it without seeing the film, more out of spite for a friend of mine who HATED the score! It has some great grooves and vocals in the score tracks, rich and melodic, I woudl like to hear Revell do more in this style...

The score is great. It actually made me think Graem Revell has potential. I never look forward to his scores. This one turned out to be different. Great vocals other than that Indian song.

I would like to hear Revell do more in this style...

You're in luck, he did. The singer is Emma Shapplin, and he did a whole album for her afterwards in the exact same style. It's called "Etterna" and you can get it at amazon.

I think it's fantastic, but then their collaboration was my favorite thing about this vastly underrated score, one of Revell's best, most of which never even appears in the film.

I agree he's uneven, but he's produced some other scores that I really love, including The Saint, The Siege and Strange Days

Great album this one, I particularly love the track "Dante's Eternal Flame" by Revell and Melissa Kaplan, a beautiful track that just doesn't last long enough.

I'll have to check out the Shapplin album mentioned above.

Well, have you heard of Secret Garden, a Norwegian group that plays "folk"-inspired musin in the New Age vein?

THAT'S what I was thinking about when I said "cheap mood CD's". Or alternatively those "Moods, vol. 1-10" CD's that also include chirping birds and brooks. These are so OBVIOUSLY therapeutic that they lose all their therapeutic value. At least for me. And I got some of the same feelings in a couple of those RED PLANET tracks (although to be fair, the Revell/Shapplin tracks were slightly better and more sophisticated...I said they were my LEAST FAVOURITE parts of the album, not that they were BAD).

I've got it from a store that was practily giving it away, and I was very surprised. I love it!!! I find it smart the way they make you think it's a song cd with a few score tracks in it, when it's actually the other way around. If it's a way for us to have more score cds on the market, it's fine for me!

Yeah, I noticed that too.

I second that, the follow up Revell/Shapplin album is excellent. I was staring to get into his stuff. The Saint has some excellent tracks (opening, the love theme, the final), and it always seems like he's on the verge of getting really good, but he's not there yet for me. I like his score for the Van Damme movie Hard Target. Some neet use of Kodo, the Japanese drummers. I like the intense percussion stuff on The Siege. The fast techno stuff on Tomb Raider is decent. I think he'll write a great score one day if he stops focusing on horror and B-type movies.

Best track on here wasn't even composed for the film-

William Orbit's Montok Point from the Strange Cargo Hinterland album, a classic from 1995 that reminds us of a time before W/O became a plastic rehash of himself...

Is it true a lot of score material didn't make it on the album?

I don't even know what I was on about back then in 2004....'cheap mood CD's'?!?

It's a wonderful experience from start to finish -- including the vocalizations.

I think I was a bit bemused by your comment back then too Thor, yeah, excellent listen start to finish.

I've only seen the film the once ( it may not be good but it's not that bad either ) but remember quite a bit of score missing including one piece that really caught my ear ( during the landing I think? ).

The vocal tracks are quite interesting as they cross the line between song and score, but the best actual score cues are not on the CD.

Well, there's at least about 86 minutes of score, and about 11 minutes on the commercial CD, so...

Yet not released in expanded form. I wonder why? Seems like a prime candidate. Most of the score remains unreleased, contains thematic material, it's a SciFi title which should give it cross-over appeal.
Can't imagine it's too expensive to license.
