This victorian musichall style score is everything Randy Newman's James and The Giatn peach WANTED to be, albeit with subtlety, class, range, sensitivity and restrain.

The Gnome King themes are incredible- no synths or other contemporary shock effect distractions- just great music that sounds like it was composed the year the film is SET.

London Symphony Orchestra really outdid themselves under Mr. Talia Shire.

WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY----------

Is David Shire SO not producing anything today????

This score alone puts him up there with Goldsmith and Williams for me---

How come he ended up doing tired TV movie scores for schlock like Talia's Bed and Breakfast with Roger Moore??????

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORLD?????????????????

I agree wholeheartdly. This is a score truly deserving of greater appreciation. How about a re-release?
David Shire, Basil Poledouris, Bruce Broughton, Lee Holdridge, John Scott. All magnificent composers and they can't land a decent job for an A-picture. This Hollywood guys don't know what they are missing for sure!!!!

This is one score no collection should be without. It's beyond good. It's brilliant. But it's also Disney, so you know the drill. (The master is missing some of the percussion tracks, for some strange reason, so remixing it properly to include them should be part of any reissue.)

The "master" as you call it was prepared with Mr. Shire, so if it's missing anything he knows about it and most likely wanted it missing.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE WORLD?????????????????

I think AHEM isn't exactly referring so much to the S.T. to "Return to Oz", but the lack of work being given to such a GREAT film composer as Mr.Shire.

WHAT A WASTE OF TALENT!!!

OZ is one of the finest scores of the '80s and one of my most treasured discs (thank-you, Bay Cities). It's a crime that no other label has stepped forward to keep this gem in print. It's also a great example of a score so well produced that it stands on its own as a colorful exploration of the Oz universe. It's not "complete", but so logically selected and sequenced that I hardly notice. Needless to say, if you come across a copy...GRAB IT. You won't be sorry.

And, by the way, where IS David Shire these days?

David lives on the East Coast with his wife Didi Conn. He's been working on a new musical about early flight called, I think, Take Flight, which I saw an early early workshop of. The key song in that score made me break out in a big smile because he simply recycled his beautiful tune from Old Boyfriends. He and I laughed about it afterwards and he said I was the only one who'd know. I told him not so.

I would just like to add my two pennies about David Shire.
Being a big fan of the man, when he walked into the production offices at MGM during the post-prodn phase of 2010 -- I immediately shoved a LP of THE HINDENBURG in his face. David was the most sincere, soft-spoken, elegant composer I'd ever met - with the exception of Johnny W. His wife, Didi seemed also to possess not one ounce of hubris! It does seem rather ridiculous that David isn't hired more often on more movies. He obviously can score just about anything!
Shire's music for LAST STAND AT SABRE RIVER is some of the best film scoring i've ever heard.
Regardless of the heaviness of THE HINDENBURG as a film -- the score managed to convey the majesty of the airship and the horrific events of its demise.

This was one of the first scores that I bought upon returning to the hobby in 1994.

It was so good that it inspired me to try so many other new things beyond John Williams and Danny Elfman, including a gentleman named Jerry Goldsmith whose work I knew only from ST:STMP (not to mention Golden Age composers).

This CD desperately needs to be re-released so that those who haven’t heard it, can.

An underrated masterpiece. Alas, I have it only on LP and my turntable, which faithfully served me for nearly 25 years, finally went ker-put. I haven't decided on buying a new one but unless this score get's a CD re-release I may have to buy a turntable just too hear it again.

David Shire.

The Taking of Pelham 123.

I don't think I need say more. An under-appreciated and under-represented composer on CD.

"Bed and Breakfast" is a magnificent score in its own right!

I just found a copy of this on lp.
I paid two bucks and it sounds good EXCEPT for two skips during my favorite part of the score (the tutti version of the beautiful main theme during the finale).

D'oh!

Terrific score.

BTW the lp is on the Sonic Atmospheres label.
Never heard of it.

Yeah, this is one of the 80's finest.

I've been seeing this often closing for less than $30 on ebay in the last few months. One auction closed for $14! I think Mr. Kimmel found a box or two, because copies have been popping up all over the place. Although that seems to have slowed now, except for Buysoundtrax who is listing it on ebay very frequently. Anyway, for those who don't want to pay the $150 this fetched 2 years ago, maybe now's the time to buy.

But then, now that Intrada might be able to release certain Disney titles...I know how much it peeves Roger that the opening percussion in the Main title is not on the cd mix....

I agree with you guys and gals, his Return to Oz, puts him up there with all the great. So many gorgeous wonderful adventurous themes. This is the one of the few soundtracks as I listened to is the for the first time on CD I got goosebumps. The opening, when the lone violin comes in, just beautiful. I also love the film as well.

His Zodiac score is excellent. Why is he, Holdridge, Grusin doing more motion picture scoring, I have no idea. I know Holdridge does a lot of TV stuff, but I miss him on the big screen.

I could be wrong but isn't the CD missing the suspenseful music when Dorothy creeps into the room of the heads, then they awaken with a large crash of the orchestra....

I've long felt he should revisit this score for a Broadway musical.

There are some exquisite melodies and motifs that would lend themselves to songs.

If I had the capital, I'd consider looking into getting the rights and putting Mr. Shire to work.
