Top story on CNN radio as I was driving into work was that Mr.Goldsmith has passed away.

Sad, sad news. Even with the numerous apperance cancellations and stories of his declining health, still shocking news.

My best wishes to his family, friends, and my endless thanks to the man himself for the pleasure his music brought to me.

I've been searching the web since I got to work ( sorry boss), but 5:00am isn't the best time for web updates.

If you're at home, maybe try CNN or MSNBC.

Is it real? If so, the last great composer of the XXth century, after Bernard Herrmann, is gone now. I'm currently watching THRILLER episodes composed by Goldsmith. I own the FOX box set which is perhaps the first sign of Goldsmith's ending. I always remember Jerry Goldsmith as Mr. Planet of the Apes.

LOS ANGELES Academy Award-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, who scored hundreds of movies and TV shows ranging from "Patton" and "Planet of the Apes" to "The Man from U.N.C.L.E.," has died.

He was 75.

Goldsmith died in his sleep last night at his Beverly Hills home after a long battle with cancer, according to his personal assistant.

Goldsmith was a classically trained composer and conductor who began musical studies at the age of 6 but his Hollywood career spanned nearly half a century.

He won a 1976 Academy Award for best original score for "The Omen" and also held five Emmys.

His music can be heard in everything from the action film "Totall Recall" to comedies, epics and dramas.

He wrote the themes for television shows, including "Doctor Kildare" and "Barnaby Jones."

Goldsmith also wrote a fanfare that is used in Academy Awards telecasts.

Jerry Goldsmith, dead at 75.

I'm completely stunned... The man's music has meant so much to me. When I look back at the earliest roots of my love for filmmusic, Capricorn One, going to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture at the Cinerama Dome when it first opened, First Blood, Poltergeist, those roots are anchored in the music written by his hand. I wish I could have met him, just once, to thank him for the gift of that music. Fortunately, so much of his music has been preserved to disc so that it can be enjoyed as long as we can hear the notes. God bless Jerry Goldsmith.

I have dreaded the coming of this day for quite some time; now it is here. This is a sad day. I lost my father on June 15; now we all lost Jerry. But just as my father is still with me deep in my heart and soul, Jerry will always be with us through his music. I am too shaken for many words; thanks for all you have given us, Jerry.

I'm very sorry indeed to hear this news. My own Goldsmith collection was comparatively small and I was late coming to some of his best scores (eg I only bought PLANET OF THE APES a couple of months back, along with THE CASSANDRA CROSSING),but he wrote some of the most memorable music around. Who can forget his tv themes as well? The theme from THE MAN FROM UNCLE will never sound quite the same again...

Rest in Peace Jerry - and thank you.

This is really sad news. Jerry Goldsmith was a TITAN amongst todays composers and highly appreciated by us film music fans. His presence will surely be missed (in future films)

Jerry Goldsmith music has meant so much to soundtrackdom via his music scores, films and the endless discussion of his music on film music message boards.

But like someone said the Death is just a phase where one continues to exist in others memories. We will continue to cheerish his anme with his music. Mr. Goldsmith has left a huge LEGACY behind. We will never have enough of him.

Let the tributes start and Varese should release his last score for TIMELINE as humble tribute (Its about time)

Long Live the music of Jerry Goldsmith!

Amer

My favourite Goldsmiths scores are:

Supergirl.
Star Trek -The Motion Picture.
The Final Conflict.
Poltergeist.
The Omen.
Wild Rovers.
The 13th Warrior.

The worst news I have ever read on this board.

frown

One of the most innovative, liberal and influential music composers in the history of the world- Both sensitive and open minded yet strongly opinionated and with a MAMMOTH backbone, every piece of Goldsmith's resume is filled with a charm, warmth and LOVE of what he did.

THANKYOU, MAESTRO!

Yes, he had been cancelling appearances through ill-health, but it's still a shock.

I'm glad I was able to see him conducting his music occasionally, the last time only a couple of years ago, I think. Among my favourites of his:

Patton
The First Great Train Robbery
The Boys From Brazil
Masada (a TV movie I really enjoyed)
Hoosiers
Planet of the Apes

plus his TV themes like: The Man from Uncle & Dr. Kildare.

RIP Jerry.

I just checked IMDB, and his last official score would either be Looney Toons OR... the rejected score for Timeline.
