As a kid as I was a huge WW2 enthusiast, and I really wanted to go and and see this film.

We won this battle, right? Only to lose the war, so I don't think it really counts. razz

Apparently, frisbeeing red berets at the German lines didn’t have the desired effect.

Another good film about a British defeat#

Lessee now.
I say a film is " good" but that's considered a "negative" comment.
I refer to "another good film"-* and that's s "negative" comment.
Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.
Brm

*DUNKIRK. A film i have praised here as a masterpiece and defended against its critics. Really negative, man.

You're "serial posting" again, Bruce.

And, lo all these years later, I still don't care for the score. (God, now that march is running through my head again.)

I've only ever put one person on my "ignore list" in all the years I've been on this board and that is Mr. Marshall. Unfortunately I can see his posts all too often when people copy-and-paste or when I forget to log-in. I just grew tired of the negativity and the feeble attempts at "humor" that invariably offended and were then followed by doubling-down and whines of "you don't have a sense of humor".
The fact that Mr. Marshall has put Joan Hue, of all people, on his ignore list is rich. She is one of the least confrontational people on this board and I always look forward to her posts. Someone sure has thin skin.

To the point: I too love A BRIDGE TOO FAR. I recently watched it with a bunch of other WWII films around Pearl Harbor day. I think it is among the best WWII films and it certainly makes the best use of the "all star cast" format. The score works perfectly and I don't think it too "jaunty". The earlier post about its optimistic feel is spot on. The film actually ends on a very sad note and the score reflects that with the "Dutch Theme" being played for melancholy effect. The more stirring march comes up a bit later as the credits roll and I think is justified as a look forward to the ultimate victory to come. May be John Addison's finest score.

I take issue with the British defeat remark.

So you were glad the Nazis won for a change?

You do realise this was based on true events and thousands died as a result?

You really are a crass bell end.

Poke yer scrabble but i will bring the shove ha'penny board.

On the subject of operation market garden - it was an ambitious plan but to say it was a defeat is wrong. It was 80 per cent victory- it just wasnt a complete success.

As others have pointed out, he was wrong even in his attempt to be dismissive and insulting. It wasn't about a British defeat at all. I seem to remember some Americans, Poles, and others involved as well. Even the dialog in the film points out it was a partial success, not a complete defeat. The Nazis didn't "win", they just delayed their defeat.

"Crass bell end" indeed big grin As an American, I have to say, the British have some choice slang.

And the relevance of bringing up that collossal cock up of riding into the wrong valley was...?!

It was their own fault, anyway - they didnt listen to David Hemmings.

Happy New Year to you, edw. I've got the Kritzerland ABTF, of which I'm very fond. I actually find some of the more seriously dramatic and sad aspects of the music remind of the title music for The World At War, as well as the BBC WWII fictionalised series of Secret Army, which starred Bernard Hepton. Maybe all the composers zeroed in on an internal musical form which captured the idea of foreign military occupation.

Grecchus, I have the World At War dvds and the score by Carl Davis and agree with you about the sad and dramatic aspect comparison. Thanks for sharing the BBC series Secret Army clip. I was able to find it on Prime and can't wait to sit back and begin watching it. PBS now has a subscription service called Passport I believe and I miss out on some of the BBC series because I don't have the streaming service. Prime offers some of the series like this one.

Thanks again for sharing Grecchus.

I used to watch Secret Army on something of an intermittent basis, edw, but there was a consistency in episode form throughout the series, so you get to know the characters quite well. When the series came to an end with the close of the war, as depicted in the series, there were a few shock moments. That's all I will say - enjoy the drama - they don't make 'em like that any more.
