Many prefer the 1959 film, “The Big Circus”, over the 1952 Oscar winner, “The Greatest Show on Earth” (1952). “The Big Circus” certainly had the cast, including Victor Mature, Rhonda Fleming, Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Gilbert Roland, Kathryn Grant and David Nelson (Ricky’s brother). The film about a financially troubled circus has fires, escaped lions, high-wire specials and internal intrigue. The film was scored by Paul Sawtell, Roy Webb and Bert Shefter with songs by Sammy Fain as well. Paul Sawtell (1906-1971) will be remembered by many on this list as composer to the 1961 film "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea", and possibly the score to “Dog of Flanders” (1960) ( a long time rare LP in stereo). However he was a prolific composer with over 500 scores to his credit in the IMDB, most of which appear to be “B” pictures. The now rare LP soundtrack was released on the Todd label in 1959 (ST-5001[stereo]/MT-5001 [mono]). I don’t believe this has appeared on CD yet. See picture below. Mike

A fine looking album Mike. Have never heard it so could not judge. Of all the "Circus" 50'-early 60's movies think only "Circus World" (titled "The Magnificent Showman") has had CD release by CNR label(6 cues). Thanks for sharing your beautiful covers!! Alex

If this movie was made only a few years later, Irwin Allen would have had his name larger than the title.

Sawtell/Shefter's work would make a great compilation release. KRONOS and Irwin Allen's LOST WORLD come to mind,as do IT THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE(Kronos slightly re-arranged)and THE BLACK SCORPION.
