I went back and listened to this again yesterday evening.

If anything should prove that McNeely is a MASTER at pastiche (along with the YOUNG INDY CD's), then this is it. Spectacular orchestral music in Williams' spirit (and with his themes incorporated graciously throughout).

I particularly love the first battle music, Xizor's theme (which stylistically resembles Darth Maul's music), the choral bits and some of the chase music.

This is of course the IDEAL soundtrack for me, as it was composed for a BOOK and as such may be developed like any other concert piece. No "expansion or complete" argument could ever be applied here.

Truly a great album that all film music fans should own (not only STAR WARS fans).

Don't forget the absolutely wonderful Ravel-esque waltz. Nothing like THAT in Williams's Star Wars music...

My only complaint is that there isn't more of it!

(And I wish they had picked the Thrawn Trilogy like they originally planned)

Now if only somebody would give McNeely some real opportunities to strut his stuff in some A-level films. . . instead hiring the usual crew of techno-hacks and third-stringers who wouldn't know a strong theme if it walked up and bit them in the ass. (Pardon me if I've been down this path before.)

If anybody has doubts about McNeely having a voice of his own, take a chance and listen to WILD AMERICA, SAMANTHA, THE AVENGERS, and the last two cuts of TERMINAL VELOCITY. There's a genuine, unique talent there, waiting for a sympathetic producer/director to find him. The people who hired Goldsmith (and I miss him dearly) should be listening to McNeely and Broughton.

Which brings up a good question: who will score the projected live-action Star Wars television series Lucas is planning? I'd vote for McNeely to at least do the pilot and set the the tone.

Heres hoping that such a TV series doesn't get off the ground. The fanboy-ism of the prequels would only be the beginnings of what would be inane fanservice catering to SW fans only.

I like it when i am listening to it, but find most of it unmemorable after i've played it. Xizor's theme has some good stuff in it. I can take it or leave it.

Xizor's theme has some passages which sound like rip-offs from John Corigliano's 1st Symphony ... Coincidence ?

I have been re-listening to this recently, and i don't think i gave it enough of a go before. There are several very good tracks on it: Xizor's Theme, The Seduction of Leia and Night Skies being my favourites. I almost gave this cd away a few times, glad i didn't now.

This music is better than anything Williams composed for the prequels, IMHO.
It's music free from any images and thus it flows and develops its themes wonderfully.
And it doesn't rely on Williams themes at all, they re just quoted a couple of times, the rest is all McNeely.
A work everyone should appreciate and cherish.

I think it was composed for a book. Can't remember the liner-notes now.

"Shadows of the Empire" was a novel, videogame, comic book, soundtrack, and action figures. Portions of the soundtrack were used in the game, to great effect I might add!

That's right. It was a novel first and that is what McNeely wrote the music for. It was eventually used in the following spin-off videogame (which I haven't played).

A lot of music from the Trilogy is used in the game, but if memory serves they used "Xizor's Theme", "Destruction of Xizor's Palace", and "Beggar's Canyon Chase".

This is one of my favorite SW scores. McNeely doesn't simply rely on any of Williams' themes, and makes their use all the more powerful when they appear. "Night Skies" is simply astounding in that regard, as is the way the Imperial March is used as an action motif in 'Destruction'.

It would have been amazing if they had been able to have someone compose music for the Thrawn Trilogy as well.

The videogame was decent for its time.

Completely overlooked (or ignored?) by me.

Now, having recently re-aquainted myself with the prequel scores I came across this one...

... and I am absolutely thrilled. This is a fantastic score, right up my alley.

McNeely knows exactly how to do Star Wars.

Highly recommended!

Sort of right, sort of wrong.

Shadows Of The Empire was literally nothing more than a marketing ploy to test the waters for the Prequel Films. Everything about it - the music, the video game, the insane amount of action figures that no one could sell for years - was a "testing the waters" blitz so they could have "firm" numbers what to expect when Lucasfilm went ahead with Episode I.
