I was watching The Incredibles on DVD a few days ago, and on the commentary track, director Brad Bird points out that when Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson) comes home late after a night of crime-busting and begins scarfing down a slice of chocolate cake, he's actually humming Michael Giacchino's main theme from the score! Can anyone else name movies where a character hums/whistles/sings/performs a film's underscore on-screen? Here's what I've got:
-Daryl Hannah in Kill Bill Vol. One (whistling Bernard Herrmann's Twisted Nerve
-The actress who plays Rowena(?) in Mr. Holland's Opus (humming)
-Alan Rickman in Die Hard (humming Beethoven's "Ode To Joy", used as the film's de facto "bad guy" theme by Michael Kamen)
Robert Mitchum's Jeff Bailey/Markham character whistles the title tune in OUT OF THE PAST. THE LONG GOODBYE has endless renditions of the title theme, both vocal and instrumental. In OCTOPUSSY, the Vijay character plays the James Bond Theme while working as a snake charmer. Jerry Lewis whistles the theme from THE BELLBOY.
In The Cable Guy, Jim Carey sings the Vulcan death match music at Medieval Times. I think the scene would have been twice as funny if he hadn't done that. He should have let the music score do the joke by itself.
Xena whistled her own theme song once or twice, while fishing I think.
Thee's a funny bit in The Emperor's New Groove where a character hums/whistles suspenseful music (low hum, suspended high note, ...) as he's sneaking around, thus scoring his own actions himself-- and the subtitles actually state it.
At the end of Absolution one of the students walks down the corridor whistling Stanley Myers's main theme, and he not only ushers in the end credits but continues whistling through them.
On TV, an episode of The Simpsons had Bart whistling His Elfmanness's theme until Marge tells him to stop...
I'm pretty sure Mickey Rourke whistles the theme in Angel Heart i think while driving a car. Well, he's whistling something anyways, and Alan parker on the commentary mentions how difficult Rourke found remembering it to whistle.
Also, doesn't Elliot Gould whistle the theme of The Long Goodbye to himself at some stage?
I hope so otherwise i've been producing false memories again.
