In addition to being a collector of John Williams and other scores, some of which I have bought from FSM, I also collect news themes. For anyone here who has a large collection of John Williams, some of you may have the NBC promo cd "The Music of NBC News" from 1998 with stereo versions of nine cuts of "The Mission" from 1985 in addition to the 10 cuts we only have on bootleg from "Fanfares and Themes". I was told that a new promo cd with the updated version of "The Mission" was supposed to come out soon, but I don't know when, I was told it was supposed to come out this spring and it hasn't come out yet. Hopefully sometime this year, if I'm being told correctly by my sources. Meanwhile, I think something has got to be done about the bootlegs, one of my trading friends had a contact all the way out in Germany that had stereo versions of the bootleg cuts, and now he's not talking, he just graduated from college and he's not returning any emails. I've considered emailing composers and talking to JW's agency about getting permission to re-record the bumpers, and "Fugue For Changing Times", if not then we're stuck with what we've got. I just hope this new music comes out soon so we can finally hear the new themes in full, again I was told this was supposed to come out this year. There's a lot of music Williams has done for NBC including the Olympics and I hope to see a lot of it, like short bumpers and themes composed specifically for television usage released sometime, if someone wises up and realizes they're sitting on a gold mine, I think.

I hope that CD does come out, Pacey1899! The NBC News theme is great and I always switch to the broadcast at the end just to hear the music after I watch the CBS Evening News.

There is, of course, a legitimate 3:30 version of this on AN AMERICAN JOURNEY which I was just playing at work today for my co-workers. (Looking for converts ala Mission-ary.)

p.s. The two Olympic themes are also represented, Summon the Heroes and Call of the Champions. Great CD and fairly cheap (used at Amazon from $4.88!)

"...thanks, Greg. Greg Wyxzyzczx from Illinois, scene of the diaorrhea soup prank.

Now we go live to California, where Bob Tornado reports on the growing cult of 'news theme' people, a collection of individuals who have forsaken normal language to communicate by singing in bombastic 'news theme' tones, in a style much heard on television news programmes themselves.

Tornado: It's been a terrible time for Laura Bastardo, whose husband, Ray, left her and her twenty seven children to join one of the 'news theme' cults springing up around the area. I spoke to her in the nude.

Tornado: Miss Bastardo, when did his strange behaviour arise?

Laura: Just a week ago. he came in from work (tears) and I asked him how it went. He looked at me and went....

Tornado: Yes?

Laura: BA-BAAAAH-BAB-BAB-BAAAAAAAH! BA-BAB-BAPPA-BAPPA-BAAAAH! BAH! BAPPA-BAH!

Tornado: It must have been awful.

Laura: Yes. It got worse, and soon it was the only way he could communicate with me and the children. On Friday nights, he usually covers me in chocolate sauce and licks it off me. I'm usually fully clothed then. He whispers sweet nothings in my ear while he pours sauce all over me. But not last week.

Tornado: What happened?

Laura: He just stood there and said (tears)...

Tornado: Yes?

Laura: BA-BAAAAH-BAB-BAB-BAAAAAAAH! BA-BAB-BAPPA-BAPPA-BAAAAH! BAH! BAPPA-BAH!

Tornado: When did he leave, Mrs. Bastardo?

Laura: Two nights ago. He left a note. It reads: "Dear Laura and the children, BA-BAAAAH-BAB-BAB-BAAAAAAAH! BA-BAB-BAPPA-BAPPA-BAAAAH! BAH! BAPPA-BAH! BA-BAPPA! BAPPA-BAAAAH! All my love, Ray." I want him back. My kids want him back...(tears)...Ray, please come home.

Tornado: Mrs. Bastardo, I have a jug of chocolate sauce here -

Laura: Get out of my house.

Tornado: So what does the cult itself have to say? I spoke to Marlon Fupgunther, the self-ordained Master of the Newsies, who gave this official statement...

Fupgunther: DA-DAAAAAAAA! DADDA-DADDA, DADDA-DADDA, DADDA-DADDA, DADDA-DADDA! BOM-BOM-BOM-BABBOOOOOOOOOOHHHM! TOOT-TOOT-TOOT-TOOT! BADDA-BAABAABAABAABAAAAA! CHUWAKADADA! BOOM-BA-BOOM! BADDA-BADDA-BADDA-BADDA-BADDA-BAAAAAAAAAAA!

Tornado: As you can see, he makes his point pretty emphatically. So, what can be done to ensure no-one else falls prey to this unusual mania? I spoke to police chief Gordon Slut..

Gordon Slut: Well, as far as I can see, I propose that all news broadcasts drop their theme tunes and replace them with something.

Tornado: Such as?

Gordon Slut: Well, a spoken introduction perhaps. Or some kind of sound effect like...a small kitten going 'meow' or the sounds of a woman in orgasm, something like that.

Tornado: Well, a small kitten sounds just peachy.

Gordon Slut: Well, I'd go for the woman in orgasm.

Tornado: Are those porn maagazines on your desk?

Gordon Slut: Hey....hey, you said you wouldn't mention them. Get outta my office, you cu-

Tornado: Time will tell whether this whole cult will diminish or whether Mrs. Bastardo will reunite with her husband and perform private acts with the sauce of their choice. Whatever happens, it remains to be seen whether the song truly will remain the same. Bob Tornado, in California.....'
