After his enjoyable (if Horner derivative) score from The Dish and his light/breezy score to Wide Awake (for Shyamalan, no less) and also The Castle (rescore),I figured he'd snag a few rom-coms before climbing the ladder to whatever genre he got type-cast in by Hollywood. But he seems to have disappeared off the radar. Anyone got any updates ?

Edmund and I exchanged brief correspondance just after Christmas last year: he said (and I quote)

"Yes, the career has been in a bit of a 'stall', BUT...I am still in the game and am ever hopeful that more work will come my way soon. And, as always, I remind myself that I am a human 'being'...not a human 'doing'. How's THAT for positive, eh?"

I guess he's just one of the multitude of talented composers who want to work, but can't get it.

I guess if the whole film scoring thing doesn't work out he could always fall back on a career shilling his own self-motivation tapes.

Thanks Jon, nice to know he hasn't given up yet (or worse, joined Media Ventures!!)

Just playing The Dish tonight and I love the score. So heartfelt and moving. The songs are great too, a nice evocation of the period.
I really would have loved Ed Choi to get a lucky break in Hollywood and get some scores out there. Such a promising talent, to my ears.

Wow! Thanks for digging up this old relic thread Lok smile

I still enjoy the few CD's I have by this guy and I filled a disc up of those samples from his site that I spin every now 'n again.

Such a waste of talent going begging. Maybe his time will come (again).

He has scored a new movie hopefully opening soon (it just keeps getting delayed): THE RED ROBIN... might be interesting...

That RED ROBIN film is in post-production according to imdb. It's a Canadian drama.
I'll catch a cable or DVD showing, I guess.
I played my Edmund Choi playlist today, which consists of his CD's for The Dish (Varese), The Castle and Wide Awake (composer promos) and various tracks from Down To You, Nola, Praying With Anger and Red (amongst other things) that were culled from his website many moons ago.
They all display a strong command of melody and orchestral chops. They also (at times) cleverly ape scores by John Williams and James Horner while maintaining the composers own individual style.
Praying With Anger and Wide Awake were M Night Shyamalan's first two films and while I would never want to trade the scores he got from JNH, starting with The Sixth Sense, I always wonder how Choi's career would have developed if Night had gone to bat for him like Burton did for Elfman on Batman (after Pee Wee).
Wide Awake features a variation on the Gloria hymn that I love almost as much as Cliff Eidelman's take in Christopher Columbus.
I hope his day is still to come.

Ed still plugging away.
His latest score for Altered Minds can be heard with the film, released this week.
There's 10 minutes worth of samples on his website.
It's a dark, moody affair..quite samples-based sounding..standard issue for modern thrillers.
Maybe M.Night will tap him for his next feature or TV drama?

That would certainly be nice, if he can't afford JNH (or if there are schedule conflicts). Choi is very talented and I hope he gets a chance to develop his voice further.

I was a fan of this score, but haven't given it a spin in years. I'll have to dig it out.
