Wouldnt it be great if the Elmer Bernstein Film Music collection series was to be part of the Varese catalogue. The last time I got an update from Bernstein website was that Elmer was planning the issuance of the series before his passing. If Varese Sarabande is upto the challange of restoring this series and I think combined with Matthew Peak's paintings much like the Varese Classic Score series would become a boon to these releases. I'd say lets make this happen and let the logistics workout a good deal. The fans will definetly pay a good deal of money for this. I know Varese tried to acquire the license in the past but it was said that "Its all upto Elmer" Im sure Elmer Bernstein's estate would be more than happy to get these series out. A wonderful homage to Bernstein's legacy!

This very subject was discussed only recently. A search on past subjects will find it.

Cheers

I just transferred his re-recording of Herrmann's rejected TORN CURTAIN score from LP onto CD. It's really a terrific record.

Though Joel McNeely's re-recording of TORN CURTAIN is excellent, I prefer this version.

I tend to prefer the recording quality of the Bernstein FMC over more recent re-recordings. Most were recorded at CTS or Olympic Studios by Dick Lewzey or Keith Grant, respectively.

More recent re-recordings have gone for the "concert hall" sound (which is a valid approach) but I like the style of these earlier recordings, which used closer miking, resulting in (to my mind) cleaner, more crisp reproduction.

YOU WONT BELIVE THIS!!!

Just received a response from the BERNSTEIN office:

" Glad that you are continuing to enjoy Mr. B's music.. and yes the Film Music Collection should be out toward the end of this year! Finally! Will be lovely to have all that music to listen to."

Start saving...this will be an astonishing release!

Excellent.

There are many advantages to being as incredibly young as I am - casual sex being high on the list; but there are also many disadvantages - not having been around when Elmer's Film Music Collection was released on LP being high on THAT list.

I've been itching to hear these releases ever since I first heard about them, years ago.

Time, I think, to ask the age-old question: can someone make a listing of all the titles in the collection? That'll start me drooling again...

If they're out by the end of the year, we must be talking BOX SET !!!!.

How much will that be ?.

Well, I must confess I'm a bit confused. I thought most masters had been either lost or destroyed. Hmmm... Maybe Lukas can give us a few clues.

Or should we hire agents Mulder and Scully ?

If this news turns out to be bona fide TRUE, then we're all in for a rare treat indeed!

According to Elmer these were in neglected shape and were thus degraded and damaged. But then again somebody musth ave worked hard on their restoration. Listenng to LP rips for THE THEIF OF BAGHDAD/THE JUNGLE BOOK and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD the sound quality is wonderful. Its does not have the airy concert hall feel to it.

More Elmer Bernstein surprises are also in store for us. smile

I believe the cds will be relased on Amber Records. Will keep you all posted as more news is confirmed.

Good work Amer, and great news!!! I only hope that the time frame is more on target than the one(s) given for KINGS OF THE SUN...

Point taken, but the release of "Kings of the Sun" was originally undertaken by the Maestro himself, and he just never had time to do it.

I imagine that the estate has hired someone to do it, so having other things to do is no longer an impediment.

Does anyone know what other releases Bernstein considered doing? And, did he record anything that was never released?

Are there any extended or unreleased cues from these original recording sessions, which could be added to CD releases of them?

Just curious...

I wouldn't count on album no.11 -
SCORPIO getting released in this
bunch. That was the only original
soundtrack recording that was in
the series, and from what I understand
the tapes are owned by MGM / Warner.
SCORPIO had been previously released
on cd by Bay Cities in their limited
edition series of Jerry Fielding titles.

Why? You think he'll get to them now?

I don't know about any unreleased or extended cues, but Bernstein did do at least two FMC recordings that were not part of the original series - "Music From the Films of John Wayne" Vols. 1 & 2. They featured his own compositions and were released by Varese.

If Varese is involved in this reissue I wonder if these will be included?

When the Tiomkin recordings were done, I recall hearing that Rhapsody of Steel was recorded. Does anyone know if this is correct? Didn't EB do a recording of Tiomkin for RCA several years after this?

If this pans out the reappearance of the FMS recordings will be THE film music event of the year...at least for those of us who have been collecting soundtracks for - ahem - a while.

What a treat! Thanks, Amer, for the heads-up.

This is a great time to re-read Elmer's Film Music Notebook, which has been collected and published in a beautiful hardcover by the folks at the Film Music Society. It's absolutely essential reading, and has some comments on the recordings themselves.
