No threads about this score, as far as I could see.

I think it's safe to say that this is my favourite Zimmer soundtrack, although I don't know if you can call it his magnum opus. Zimmer is at his best in ethnic mode, IMO, and the haunting, ambient atmosphere of this score is absolutely spellbinding. I love the dramatic build-up of "I Dreamt I Woke Up" (co-written by Nick Glennie-Smith). I also love the percussion here...it sounds very "watery" and delicious, if that makes any sense. And for once the pan flute isn't cheesy!

This is an underrated gem of a soundtrack. Thumbs way up!

I bought this in anticipation of Last Samurai. Didn't do much for me but I'll give it another try. I prefer The Thin Red Line.

Oh, I just saw Pearl Harbour (got it from the library hence it was free). I didn't think Zimmer's score was that bad actually. Sounded a little like John Barry in places and also Thin Red Line, but it was pretty innocuous for the most part. No better or no worse than his normal fare.

I know that it is frequently compared to those two scores, but there's a difference...RANGOON is far more melodic. THIN RED LINE wears out its ambient welcome after a while, and LAST SAMURAI isn't sure where it's going. Both are fine, but they don't do as much for me as RANGOON.

A piece that I frequently put together with this score, though, is "Swimming" from WATERWORLD. It associates some of the same sensations.

NP: BEYOND RANGOON (Zimmer)

I agree, Beyond Rangoon is a very nice score. A bit like a down-tempo version of Black Rain if you ask me. I also agree that The Thin Red Line is a bit too ambient and non-melodic. In my ears both Rangoon and The Last Samurai sound delicoius.

A story about Beyond Rangoon:

I bought the CD when it came out 10 years ago, and at one occasion me and my buddy played it in company of two girls. I remember one of them saying "this is nice music but it's not music a boy should listen to!"

I suppose it meant that the music sounded a little too soft and not very masculine... :-D

the Zimmerheldenmusik machine is at it's best when it does non-action type stuff like Rangoon, The Pledge, House of the Spirits, etc.

good CD!

Going northwards, would be Mandalay Pictures.

For all the flak he gets about sounding the same in every score, I've always enjoyed that 3 of his Asian-influenced scores (Beyond Rangoon, Black Rain, The Last Samurai) are vastly different, but all enjoyable. BR is easily one of his better, underappreciated works

You know I have been listening a lot to Waterworld lately. I think the score ages very well. I like how eclectic the music is from track to track. Great action cues too.

Nice to see a thread about this wonderful gem. This has been my favorite Zimmy ever since I got it, and I always recommend it to people. I love when western composers score asian movies, for some reason the results are always quite special, like Fenton's "Anna and the king", Howard's "Snow falling on cedars", Poledouris' "Farewell to the king" etc.

Perhaps some valid criticism could be that the themes and action music is a little simplistic, and is repeated alot throughout the score. But I like it like that, because the themes are so absurdly catchy and gorgeous, and the entire 38½ minutes are just pure entertainment without a dull moment.

The movie is quality stuff too. It's about real events and is made very realistic, so it's not only a thrilling and saddening experience, but also an important subject to be aware of.

I found it to be detrimental to the picture.
A pedestrian score which doesn't match John Boorman's visual inspiration.

It grew dull very fast.

Love the first cut (great melody) but the rest of the score was a disappointment to me...

I can't believe people are picking this one as their fave Zimmer and not CRIMSON TIDE!?!?!?
