A great score. If you like music from the Baroque era, you will dig it. Some say it sounds a great deal like Rameau, but I wouldn't know myself. There are obvious Morricone moments though, like the viola solo in the Vatel theme, and the love theme is pure Morricone as well, but even his Baroque sounding material are unmistakenly him.

The score is completely melodic all the way through, so if you don't care about Morricone's suspense music, then there's nothing to worry about with this score. There are standalone melodies throughout most of the score, so it's impossible to get bored, and they are all good and catchy.

My rating: (****½)

I really like the score. It has lots of varied themes on it and the music's very classical at times. It's a much underrated score by the Maestro imo.

If it's cheap, definitely go for it!

I don't think you'll be disappointed (if you ever are!)

Vatel is a showcase for Morricone's classical composition techniques. Highlights for me are Symphonie Avec Voix and Kaleidoscope, a marvellous fugue lasting over six minutes that harks back a bit to The Humanoid, itself one of my favourite Morricone scores.

As has already been said, no dissonance in this one.

I have it and listening to it now, and yes I like it alot.
I even thought I was picking up some Once Upon a Time in The West score on some of the cues.
Very pretty score.

Just got my copy... FR version...

Is anyone elses copy also defective?
There are some "audio gaps" during 3:10-20 on my copy...

Yep ... common faults, I'm afraid. I bought my copy - cheaply - many years ago and found at least two faults: I think between tracks 16 and 17 (could be between 15 and 16, I'm unsure now) there's a break and a repeat of several seconds ... and then in the final track there's an awful break which spoils the mood (albeit it's not a great arrangement/version of that iconic music).

It is a lovely score and after a few plays you do get used to the faults!

It's interesting... I've got the EU version... with defects... a friend of mine got the french pressing too and his copy is fine...

Did you get the US or EU version? It would make sense if only one of the pressings got affected but it seems now that it's some of the copies only.

with FR you mean the French edition?
If so, yes, my copy too skips a couple times, luckily only during the one track I don't like (an IMHO dreadful arrangement with voice of Handel's Fireworks , not by Morricone)
I always assumed that it was because i bought it used, but then maybe there more than that to it...
