Hi everybody! smile

"Star 80" Soundtrack by Ralph Burns

I have been looking forever for this rare and beautiful soundtrack from this dark yet wonderful film by the same name. I would guess FilmScoreMonthly would be the best place to ask "people who know" for information about ULTRA rare soundtrack pressings.

My search for this soundtrack has gotten me nowhere. But I will not retire as this soundtrack is too good to simply "give up on".

Ralph Burns needs a compilation. Wonder why every other great film composer get's compilations, while this two-time academy award winner always gets left out. ? frown

It took me 30 years, but I finally saw STAR 80. Although the soundtrack includes a number of then-contemporary pop tunes (including Billy Joel's "Big Shot" and Rod Stewart's "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy"), Ralph Burns also wrote four songs for the film and provided additional background music, none of which has ever been released. Here's a brief bit of the score in this montage scene:

I hate to 'cry wolf', and unfortunately have nothing to even offer up, but....

I swear I saw this on LP way back when, just a score cue or two on it maybe.
I'd be curious if anyone could confirm.

Such a tragic story, pretty good film as well.

Yes there was a lp of STAR 80 back in the 80's . Got it at Footlights and sold it to a tourist in New York from Germany for about $20,00. I know, there was not a lot of copies of it going around. Was sought of rare. Thanks for bringing that nice memory back.

Any STAR 80 LP must have been an unmentionable, or some test pressing that "escaped," because I've found no source that confirms any official release. Maybe if someone went looking in the Warner vaults, some previously prepared but unused album master might be found.

It probably was a bootleg , as we know there were plenty of those. During those years I picked up any soundtrack I could get my hand on.

Haven't watched this in years and forgot how spot on Burns' original tracks were. Great scene. Great performance by Roberts. If you can take this little montage out of its original context, it actually becomes endearing and funny--in a good way. Burns does seem to be channeling / referencing Joel here and maybe a little bit of "Call Me," which would be appropriate since Roberts is almost spoofing Gere and AMERICAN GIGOLO in this scene.

The latter wouldn't be surprising. I'd love to have these tracks outside of the film.

Superb disco instrumental. I'm pretty sure its more of the fine work of Ralph Burns rather than a source cue.

Man, did Roberts own this role...so much so that it probably affected his career detrimentally because of what a p.o.s. his character was on film and in real life.

It might be short, but I'd love for someone to release this.
