I relistened to this soundtrack the other day (the EXPANDED version!), and I still think it's amazing that a pop band that has not done any scores (or done any since, as far as I know), could do this clasically symphonic thing. OK, so they got some help from David Paich's father Marty, who has some classical training, but still! It's only in the instrumental "Take My Hand" track that the Toto harmonies and progressions truly become evident. Otherwise, it's a slow, melancholic and grandiose thing that sounds nothing like they ever did before or after. The only downside with the album is that it's a bit too long. As the music is very slow and overly mono-thematic (although not entirely), it drags on a bit on occasion. I actually think the original album was better, but this was given to me as a gift, so... Oh, and about the sound problem thing. I'm not sure if I have the 1997 or 2001 reissue, but I don't really have any problems with the sound quality. It sounds more or less fine to me.

I also think the expanded is too long. I don't really appreciate the dialogue on the original release, but I find that I much prefer listening to it rather than the expanded. Sometimes I just don't understand those "every cd must have every note in precise film order" folks out there.

The remastered edition sounds much better, and the stereo channels which were reversed on the '97 release have been corrected. There are some anomalies still, but overall it's a superior presentation to the '97 disc. Good score. Gotta agree with Thor that this disc lasts a runs a bit long. I like it better than the Polygram release, though.

I just bought the 40-ish minute version. There are some nice tracks on this. I like the Prophecy theme by Eno, reminded me of HEAT. Also, the tracks Paul meets Chani and Take My Hand and Paul Takes the Water of Life, are very nice. Big Battle sounds like a quite monotonous small battle, and would have been nice beefed up. Or maybe my headphones are on too quiet. Don't like the track Dune Desert Theme at all. That's more 80's pop, and fairly instantly forgettable. Remember the film coming out as a kid, and getting the stickers in my Shreddies, and thinking it was crap and not as good as star wars when i saw it. Haven't seen it in probably 15 years. I bought it as it was cheap, and not for the duff cover-painting. Rather glad i did, reckon it will indeed grow on me a little as time flies.
