Resurrecting a 10-year old thread... Here's my film sequence run down of Frankel's surprisingly sophisticated scores to The Prisoner (1955) and The Curse of the Werewolf (1961): http://cuebycue.blogspot.com/2016/07/the-prisoner-frankel-1955-curse-of.html The Naxos disc sounds fantastic. Good rundowns there, Ed. This thread made me listen to the whole disc again, and I'd forgotten how great THE PRISONER is. I think I prefer it over CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF. I like quasi-religious. I see you mention Frankel's interpolation of the Dies Irae in PRISONER. I'd forgotten about that too, and it kind of took me by surprise. I really must get those David Huckvale books. I've seen him on the Blu extras for a lot of the early Hammers, sitting at the piano, giving little musical extracts, and above all talking sense - and I've perused some of the stuff he has written about Hammer's psychological thrillers, and I'm convinced that his writing's insightful. What I try to avoid are film music books which go along the lines of, "then he did this and it was great, then he did that and it was brilliant, the horror being stressed by dramatic horror music, and the love theme showing that there's romance too". But Mr Huckvale seems to have the brains. Zardoz (or anyone) - Am I a nutmeg for not buying those books?

Hi, Graham. About that author's book on Hammer & the musical avant-garde - you need not concern yourself about the writer displaying any groupie-type devotion exclaiming praises left right & center. Huckvale organizes his chapters by compositional approaches [usually 2 composers per chapter, although Frankel (& a few others) receives an entire chapter on his music]. The author even has one chapter on the conductors (Hollingsworth, Martell, etc.) and incorporates recollections from individuals such as James Bernard. Yer a nutty nit if ya don't get it, GW.
