Just picked this one up. A very beautiful score but the main theme reminds me of another score almost note for note but I can't think which one it is. Can anyone shed any light?
I remember really liking Rachel Portman's music when she first exploded onto the scene, many years ago. She wrote some beautiful melodies that recalled the genius and simplicity of John Barry and Georges Delerue. I was less keen on her 'oompah oompah' comedy style scoring that permeated many of her scores, but the main theme could always be relied on to beguile. Then, I just seemed to tire of her music and lost all interest. I still return to the ones I own (Benny & Joon, Only You, Cider House Rules, Legend Of Bagger Vance) from time to time and they still sound great. Anyway, everytime I see this film, the music always stands out. I finally grabbed a copy for a reasonable price this week and look forward to giving it a listen away from the film. Any other fans of this one? How does the music play on it's own?

I LOVE this score and bought it after I saw the movie, which I also enjoyed. It has a lovely main theme. I also love the McCartney song used in it. This is one of my favorite Portman scores.

This is one CD where (and I know I'm going against most people's preferences here) the songs and the score tracks play better interspersed amongst each other. Five wistful/melancholy songs (hey, there's even an Eels song) and then Portman's score tracks sound better to me with some contrast and mixing up. Aside from the Eels track, I quite like the Macca song and the 2nd song (Make You Mine by the Clientele) I also mix things up with those Disney albums when they plonk all the songs and band tracks at the front and then have the score tracks run to the end. They also benefit me with some interaction. Anyway, really enjoying this CD, Portman can sure do wistful/melancholy damn fine.
