EXCELLENT score, I love Cocoon return, and I also like the film, both of them. What I do is I combined the two soundtracks onto a Best of Cocoon disc. Since this soundtrack is over 50minutes, I doubt well see an expanded since so much of the music is already available, now a score like, lets say Peggy Sue Got Married where there is like 13minutes of score, now that is a PRIME candidate for an expanded score. Also Horner's batteries not included had a few jazzie numbers on it, check that one out as well.

The jazz cues on The Return are excellent. But as has been said the orchestral cues are mostly rearrangements of the first score. It's very good though and an album combining both scores would be a great idea.

Yes, there is a hiss on the German pressing that is less evident on the U.S. release I don't own either release, but admit that that sounds weird. What did they do? Do two different masterings, one for Europe and one for the US? I mean, the only way these two releases can sound different from each other is when the actual bits and bytes on the discs are different, and for that, the master would have to be different?

You act like this is uncommon. It happens a lot especially from stuff in the 80s, European and Japanese pressings often have different mastering from the US versions. I remember when I was seeking several SADE albums, and I found the European pressings manufactured in Austria were very different from the US versions, and I've seen many other examples. It sounds like the Europe version of Cocoon Returns may have used a multi generation dub.

To be honest, it wasn't me who heard the difference but a mate who owned both versions. I have the Collosseum issue and it doesn't sound that great, but it's okay I suppose. My mate A/B'd the two discs and said there was a lack of hiss and a greater clarity of sound in the USA release that made it superior to the European pressing. I have another mate who says, at it's just a direct copy of zeros and ones, there should be no difference whatsoever. I think the best way to sort it all out would be to re-issue a deluxe-edition with cleaned up sound and all the additional score tracks for good measure
