I finally took the plunge and picked up The Beyond. My only experience with Frizzi's work was Zombie, which I didn't find too appealing. It lacked the energy and brightness that made Goblin's Dawn of the Dead so unusual. But wow! This is a great album! Wonderful fusion of Goblin and Morricone. Also, the vocoder-like effects remind me of Phantasm.
I know it's a long shot, but are there any fans here who can recommend similar albums from Frizzi? Thanks-

Yay! The Beyond is ace. I like the film too. Especially the ending. I used to watch that over and over just for the music. I quite liked Frizzi's Zombie, especially the opening.
Yeah, I was thinking of giving Zombie another try. I think I was 14 when I saw it. It was just too damned bleak and grim (both film and score). But I felt that way about a lot of Morricone's work back then and my appreciation has matured greatly. I'll be sure to rent The Beyond as well. I've heard great things about it.
One of the best (and worst) days in recent memory for me was discovering the "Moviegrooves" website.
Best, because the site has a zillion CDs (well, about 1000) of incredibly obscure and cool film scores, library music, and just plain unclassifiable stuff -- and has sound clips for everything.
Worst, because... well, since discovering the site, my productivity on my home computer has been shot to hell, 'cause I can't stop browsing Moviegrooves and listening to all their stuff. :-)
Cool. So I finally saw The Beyond. It was terrific! Man that ending has staying power! To see the visuals the music accompanies was a real treat. (I also got to see where the cover for the old Fangoria produced "Deep Red" book came from). Iconic gore!
I also watched Zombie and City of the Living Dead, and instantly bought both scores as well. It was nice seeing Zombie cleaned up on DVD...it struck me as a lot more slick and less dreary than I remember from that shitty pan and scan VHS.
I love that early 80's prog. horror sound. I also got Manhattan baby, which is another great score. Anyway, just wanted to heap a little more praise on Frizzi. He really had his art together. Goblin might be dead, but i can still discover their imitators! Viva Frizzi!
