I watched the dvd of 'Harper' the other night for the first time. I am surprised at how much fun the film is. Paul Newman (appears to be) having a great time in this role as a private detective, and shares this with the audience. (He gets slugged and beaten more times than I can recall, but still looks pretty damn good afterwards.) The film has a very witty, well honed screenplay by William Goldman, and the opening scenes during the credits of Newman waking up in a disheveled room/office is quite amusing! Two things linger in memory after the film ends: Striking Cinematography by the master Conrad Hall and the outstanding score by Johnny Mandell! It's an excellent 60's/jazzy/moody score that deserves a cd release. Enjoy this film and it's terrific score!

Just a small correction. The composer's name is Johnny Mandel. We need many more of his scores on CD, yes? Which would be preferable or possible? Any ideas out there?

I agree that Harper is a wonderful film and score and, since Lukas and company seem to be working the Warner vaults at the moment, I'd suggest a pairing of HARPER and Mandell's score for AN AMERICAN DREAM.

(Unless they would prefer an "all-Harper" disc of HARPER and THE DROWNING POOL.)

Thanks Lester! I corrected it - hadn't had my morning coffee! Yes, Johnny Mandel. It IS quite a neat little score! I'd really like his 'THE SAILOR WHO FELL FROM GRACE WITH THE SEA' score to come out too. Years ago, I'd had the Japanese Album of it, but I've never seed a cd of it from Japan.

Excellent movie with some incredibly good dialogue- I'm a sucker for Private Eye stories and films. I love the score. Johnny Mandel is way unrepresented on cd- I love Point Blank!

Yes StevenJ, some unexpectedly good dialogue. I didn't know what to expect when I put the dvd in and hit play. I was amused with a scene of Newman being questioned by the local Police and he dismisses them with:"...yeah, I used to be a Sheriff till I passed my literacy test" (makes a face at the Sheriff).

(Unless they would prefer an "all-Harper" disc of HARPER and THE DROWNING POOL.)

The "all-Harper" leaning is logical and exquisite: pairing Mandel and Small is a wonderful idea because these are two under-represented composers.
"Harper" as a film is a personal favourite of mine; I love the irony, the casualness, the desinchantment and cynism of the title character. The cast is also incredible. I just love the ending with Newman and Hill. Some scenes really shine, especially the hippy sect villa with the foreign workers who threaten Harper at night.

Add my name to the "HARPER" CD idea. Still have my Mainstream LP, as well as THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING and AGATHA, which could use some type of release, too.

The idea is old new because many people ask for it. You can't image it. I even know a film music critic who make the demand.

Stefan - THAT ENDING.... Pure William Goldman! Since I'd never seen it before, well, it certainly surprised me! I LOVED the ending! And it came as a surprise, so I won't mention it here in case others want to see it for the first time, but yeah, what an ending!

It's a really good movie. Newman is- well, the usually impeccable actor he always is.
I can't wait to see this again. I ordered it for Tuesday delivery from Amazon today- I'll bet I've dropped $150.00 bucks there this week.

I ordered mine too along two other titles: "Experiment in Terror" and "I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" (featuring audio comments by a scholar).
When my DVD arrives, it's gonna be party time: I'll publish online some juicy quotes from Harper and Co.

There's a picture of the ending at imdb:

As I said, the cast is incredible:
Paul Newman .... Lew Harper
Lauren Bacall .... Elaine Sampson
Julie Harris .... Betty Fraley, Singer
Arthur Hill .... Albert Graves, Sampson's Lawyer
Janet Leigh .... Susan Harper
Pamela Tiffin .... Miranda Sampson
Robert Wagner .... Allan Taggert, Sampson's Pilot
Robert Webber .... Dwight Troy
Shelley Winters .... Fay Estabrook
Harold Gould .... Sheriff Spanner
Roy Jenson .... Puddler
Strother Martin .... Claude, Cult Leader

I agree with all about the quality of this movie.

I ran it as a 'boy' projectionist in '66 and it opened my eyes to 'film noir' and the value of a good script.

Like David, I caught up with HARPER only the other night after 40 years.

Good grief, if it wasn't for some of the hats it could have been made this year.

Mandel did some classy stuff didn't he?

HI Mulan98. I agree as well that the film still seems 'fresh'. There is a scene however incorportating live action and rear projection that shows a couple driving along The Pacific Coast Highway (around Malibu) and making a u-turn. There is mostly untouched land along the beach fronts - not anymore! For some reason, I particularly liked a brief scene shot at night of Harper driving onto an oilfield. Conrad Hall lit that scene very well, brief as it was. And whatever happened to Pamela Tiffin?

It's a classic film, enjoyable start to finish, and yes, one of Goldman's absolute best screenplays. Close to McDonalds' brilliant novel, the changes work well, including yes that fabulous ending.

For those thinking of purchasing the film of 'HARPER', consider this. I went out to purchase the film after having rented it from Netflix. I went to several places, finding the individual film of 'HARPER' hovering at around $19.99 everywhere. BUT.... when I went to Circuit City, I found 'THE PAUL NEWMAN COLLECTION'. This incorporated the films of:'POCKET MONEY', 'THE MACKINTOSH MAN', 'THE LEFT HANDED GUN','SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME', 'HARPER', 'THE DROWNING POOL', and 'THE YOUNG PHILADELPHIANS'..... For $39.99 (I bought the set). Just thought I'd pass this on to those who might want to buy it.

I might just buy this David. Thanks for the heads up. It's a pity that hardly anybody talks very much about Hud anymore. It is one terrific movie. Newman and Patricia Neal what a combination, not to mention Brandon De Wilde and Melvyn Douglas, and of course Elmer's guitar music, they sure can't make 'em like that anymore ! And yes, Martin Ritt, Larry McMurtry, and James Wong Howe...what a movie, yippee !
Niall.

There is a saying that a woman can never have enough jewelry. Agreed. But the reality is that a woman can NEVER have enough Paul Newman movies.
