Does anybody know if Shifrin's STARSKY AND HUTCH theme has ever been released as a recording; 45, LP, CD? As far as I know it hasn't, which is a damn shame since Scott's OK but inferior theme for the same show has been released and covered a dozen times (Why?). I seem to also recall Lalo has a few other now lost but very cool TV themes under his belt; BLUE LIGHT and T.H.E. CAT. And when is someone, anyone, going to release the marvelous TV music of Billy Goldenberg? I hope before I die!

Maybe Mr. Schifrin would consider releasing a "TV Themes" album, an anthology of some of his best work for television?

Couldn't agree more - I don't think I've ever seen even a cover version of Schifrin's theme. Scott's is funky enough, but not really as good (and interestingly enough, Scott's own commercial version of it wasn't as good as those transmitted). To be honest, I preferred Mark Snow's effort to Tom Scott's, but I guess it's the one least likely to be associated with the show.

The basic melody for Schifrin's S+H music (the end titles at any rate) appears in the track 'Turning Point' on his CTI disco album BLACK WIDOW. If you listen to the sample on the amazon.com website you can hear it very clearly. But boy, is it heavily discofied!

I don't see sounds I am only capable of hearing them, and I have heard a cover many times.
The first is one I own on an old record, the second one is in the Starsky and Hutch computer game, and the third is a cover by a popgroup in the 90's (can't remember their name, only saw it once).

Personally I'd love to have the original music of the whole series on CD. FSM are you listening? You did a great job with CHiPs, and it would be terriffic to continue with S&H.

Kind regards.

Schifrin's music from the first season is something I'd like to see released. I believe Alan Silvestri also scored three episodes as well.

At the time there was no full listing online, so I had to go through the end credits of each episode. Since then it's appeared on IMDb.

I would be more than satisfied with all of Lalo Schifrin's 'Starsky & Hutch' music from the Pilot episode and the episodes 'Savage Sunday' and 'The Fix' (and would think it'd all fit on one disc), but if that wasn't possible I'd gladly just take the music from the Pilot (the score, the main Title and end themes for the first season episodes and the source music Mr. Schifrin composed for scenes in the Pilot). It's long overdue.

Simon, figures BLACK WIDOW would be one of the few Schifrin recordings NOT in my library, but I'll keep an eye out. / And you guys are certainly correct about the pilot episode score being a real monster! I have a CDR with 11 cuts from what I assume to be the pilot or the first episode (do not remember where I got it - maybe Big Jim Wynorski). Titles such as Zebra Theme / Coffin for Stars / Lap-Dance Club / Omaha Tiger. This is very good stuff - sort of a spaced-out, trippy version of his Dirty Harry work. The tracks are lean and sharp. A cut called Silence actually is a bit reminiscent of some eerie phrases heard in NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD! Lalo seems to be using more synth in lieu of the larger orchestra he obviously could afford working on the Eastwood projects. / G-Money: I agree, I agree - 100%! / Justin, kudos for the determination to get those S&H scoring credits! / I suppose you guys already know this but there is a quite faithful S&H main title cover available as an mp3 download, on Amazon I think. Don't know who made it but "Thank you!" / And Disco, I can't help myself but to point out that you refer to that third pop-group cover by telling us that you "only SAW it once." Apparently, and contrary to protestations, you too can experience music with your peepers.

Watched the Starsky & Hutch pilot last night and apart from appreciating the grittier take on what would become the series proper, I enjoyed Lalo's Dirty Harryesque sound to the score. Particularly the scene outside the motel (in the rain) when the crook goes down the side of the building.

Cinematically and character wise, I also saw elements of The French Connection, The Seven Ups, and Busting in the mix. My fellow '70s old hands probably know which scenes I'm talking about already.

I only ever briefly watched this show thirty years ago in reruns but remembered how well the two leads connected with one another. Paul Michael Glaser reminds me of a (lesser) James Caan, but is an engaging performer in his own right.

Starsky is the little cousin of Keneely but in the homicide department.
Glaser is in the line of Gould: same laid-back style.
Catch my meaning.

Seasons 1,2, and 4 go for peanuts at Amazon. In fact, season two is currently $7.19--new.

Watching this series for the first time in decades reveals it to be much more character driven than its reputation suggests. That's a good thing. smile I'm looking forward to hearing the scores since it's an aspect of the show I never paid much attention to, outside of the carousel of theme changes.

Meanwhile, here's an Ernie Anderson-voiced promo for the S4 episode, "Birds of a Feather" ("Hutch faces the toughest bust of his life!"):

Try not to notice Hutch's cheesy mustache. wink

Johnjohnson, there is very good reason why you like Lalo's theme more than the others: because it's BETTER. I'm sure the Maestro appreciates us noticing the fact.

Mundell Love provides wall-to-wall underscore--he never lets up!--for S1 Ep3 "Death Ride." His cue at the episode's start is quite evocative of Dave Grusin's immortal "Mr. Connection" from 1973's The Friends of Eddie Coyle.
