Bernardo Sagall didn't do a lot of film scoring - maybe less than twenty low-budget features and about ten episodes of the Columbo TV series. But his score for Custer of the West, the Robert Shaw movie, has its fair share of very good cues.
Washita, The Last Stand is strong, and the main theme is very attractive. The marching song, When the War is Through, is as catchy a western soldier's song as one could wish for.
The CD release on Comanche label is atrocious. I don't know if it was a legitimate european release but it is apparently mastered from LP and is pervaded with clicks and pops. There is plenty of distortion too.
Is there a possibility we can look forward to a decent release of this score? Anyone know if there are good masters available? Played by The Royal Philharmonic, the performances sound pretty good, as far as one can tell from the bad CD sound.
Despite some limitations, the Segall music is of much greater consequence than many of the duds that seem to be issued these days simply on the basis that they exist.

You're absolutely right about this - it's an unusual score for a western, but has some terrific moments, musically. I get the impression that Mr Segall and Robert Shaw were friends, which may be why (or how) he wound up getting this assignment.
With CUSTER OF THE WEST, Segall certainly rose to the occasion. A "decent release" would be most welcome, indeed.

Yes, well, I bought the DVD but only because I saw it on a budget label for £4.99. I valued my old album of this - unfortunately in the UK the record was released with an ordinary LP sleeve with no liner notes. Whereas the U.S. issue had fold-out sleeve, liner notes and even a small photograph of Bernardo Segall.

Cameron, yes, I noticed a copy of this on eBay recently. What was interesting was that the lyrics were by Earl Shuman (I seem to remember) whereas the lyrics for the other songs written for the film were done by Will Holt.

Excellent score though. I know Segall is low profile but Custer isn't. Use that beautiful LP cover in the artwork and find another score to go with it and this is good for a 1000 sell out.
