Thought I´d do another meta-topic. For the longest time, I´ve wanted to do a "poll" on what ASPECTS of film music that interest people the most and what you DON´T find particularly interesting. Care to play along? I´ll start: Interesting: * In-depth aesthetic discussions - both related to the interaction of film and music and the music in itself * Sociologial topics - for example "personal" questions or charting particular habits of film score fans * Topics about our soundtrack listening experience (this includes the whole original vs. rerecording debate, for example) * Non-film music related topics that aren´t very formal, such as the "Cheers!" thread (a sub category of this would be "humourous, quirky threads about something insignificant that everyone can relate to nonetheless") Not so interesting: * Technical, "superficial" topics about formats, technology etc. * Lists * Dead horse topics * Speculation about upcoming releases * Topics about the postal system and whether or not people have received this or that CD * Threads about American films, TV series, politics or people that are beyond my frame of reference (either because it never got any exposure outside the US or simply because it was before my time...or both at the same time) There are more in both categories, but you get my drift....

What I find interesting are discussions about particular scores, how it moves people, how they work outside the films and so on. What I could care less about are political discussions (on a soundtrack BB anyway) and just who ordered the latest release. You know, the one's with "ordered!" posted on and on. But that's about it. I like a variety of things.

i'm not a fan of the more technical hardware threads, mostly because i only play my scores on a discman, and can't afford anything better. heh. i really don't like the threads that seem to descend into religious/political debate. um, what else, i like reviews of scores, with details in. i'm not musical at all and don't know any terms or anything. so really enjoy some of the more detailed reviews. also suggestions for scores too, even if it is a list, or something. off-topic, i like stupid threads, with Pythonesque silliness, stuff about food or recpes, or threads like C.kuhn's pix of olde Germany, which are a treat. dat's aboot it i reckons.

I like informational threads, like... The Shirley Williams last score on free download thread, or... The Navarone DVD now has music extras. I'm not so keen on the List threads, as they eventually include almost every title you can thinks of. I love the "stereo/mono" techie type threads, but then I'd have to as I've started many of them. I also like the threads that get terminated. It's like watching an accident happen.

Not interesting: *all topics not related to cinema and fim music

I kinda like everything... and not... If I have time I might just jump into a thread that I would otherwise not be interested in. Therefore, I still suggest a classification system (with colors, or icons or whatever) which make it instantly visible as to which category the topic belongs to. This way the offtopic board can be fused back in again.

Not so interesting: * Lists * Dead horse topics * Speculation about upcoming releases --->>>These an be fun, but often get slashed and hijacked in worthless discussions... * Topics about the postal system and whether or not people have received this or that CD

I'm basically easy going and would tolerate anything related to film music as long as people are civilized. I mean this is a forum about film music and not plumbing. Yes, there are certain topics I could do without like list questions such as what scores have you purchased lately (very showy!), the most expensive score you have purchased (who gives a shit!), what scores are you listening too now, speculations about the list of titles Varese will release in the year 2020 and the deciphering of the riddles given by BSX, favorite score, favorite composer, favorite genre, favorite after shave... wishing dead composers Happy Birthday... but most of all whining topics such as broken cd cases, spelling mistakes on inlays, potential bootlegs and if Tsunami and Harkit are legal record labels and "if" questions. If you had to score and if Goldsmith was Williams and Horner Madonna... small and petty things like that, nothing much. I would prefer "why" and "how" and "comparison" questions more. Why is so and so your favorite composer and why is this score the worst score ever released and what possessed you to purchase a score for 500 bucks when it can be found in the bargain bin of a particular retailer for 10 and how has film music evolved in the past 25 years and in what way is this part of the score more effective in this particular scene as compared to the scene where he drowns in the toilet... small petty things like this I guess, nothing much.

Well, I don't post much, but I lurk here in my nonstop quest for scores or composers that I don't know about. My collection is quite large, been collecting since 1981, but I must confess I have little interest in being part of the discussions about scores, don't have time and I always think why anybody would care what I had to say, no point. But I am interested in the opinions of scores, and by getting "to know" members here (by reading their opinions) I do find scores I want to hear and listen to, that are in my taste. Much like reading Ebert movie reviews. I don't agree always, but I know the guy's taste pretty good, so I know how I'd like it personally. I like lists, but if you list your favorite Goldsmith, I want to know WHY it's your favorite Goldsmith. That's how a lurker like me can learn :-)
