Some years ago I went to the trouble to find a music box with a film music tune in it. I found I could order a mechanical musical element alone with any tune the manufacturer had done already.

I don't remember what tunes I saw when the clock shop owner showed me the catalog (except "Lara's Theme" from DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, which I think was in every freaking music box I ever opened as a child), I ended up buying David Raksin's "Laura." I still have it and it is my ambition to find a real box for it someday. Just this weekend, I also saw a mechanical musical element for Henry Mancini's "Pink Panther Theme."

Do you own or have you seen any others? (While I'm sure we can put just about any tune in an electronic musical element, I'd like to hear about MECHANICAL ones you've encountered.)

No music boxes but I bought a slot machine that plays the inspector theme if you win a major jackpot and the pink panther if you win the grand jackpot.

I want one (resembling a coffin, naturally) that plays Gunoud's Funeral March of a Marionette, associated with Alfred Hitchcock.

I wonder how these stand with regards to copyright.

There are tons of music box sites where you can customize with tunes from song lists. One of the best I've found is at...

http://www.worldofmusicboxes.com/

Scroll all the way to the bottom and click on 700 tunes.

Not much in the line of film music, but you can find some.

I had a custom box made for my dad several years ago, and the tune I picked was "Somewhere Out There" from An American Tail. There's a long story behind that, but it was (and still is) a special tune for us both.

Use to be that you needed one of those little metal contraptions to play music boxes.

Now, all it should take is a little computer chip. Go to Hallmark, now you can get birthday cards that play a song when you open them.

Should be easy now to make music boxes that play a tune when you open them, and the specific tune could be programmed into it.

I suspect that someone already does it.

So, in theory, I COULD have a music box that plays the title music from Total Recall.

I just found a box (2 clams in a thrift store) where I think I can install my "Laura" in place of the one inside. Wish me luck.

Anybody found any MECHANICAL (not digital/computer/electronic) film music boxes since?

Lotsa film music.

Thorn Birds is there.

Alex North made it (guess!).

So did David Shire, though not with the tune I wanted. (guess!)

I installed it, gingerly, and got it to play. Now it's got a bit of a grinding noise, so I'll see if I can fix it.

First priority, though, is to replace the "Precious Moments" picture on the top of the box!

I think I would want one that played Georges Delerue's theme from Joe Versus the Volcano.
