I saw the 70s "The Three Musketeers" & "The Four Musketeers" last night (DVDs very cheap from HMV). Great music in both films, out of the two I prefer Schifrin's "Four Musketeers".
I have the Bay Cities CD of Legrand's score & 20mins of the "Four Muskeeters" on a Schifrin compilation (which sounds like the actual movie score).
It would be great to have both scores compleat - on Schifrin's Alpha label ? - but as these were independent prods. maybe the tapes are missing.

I'm not sure why two composers were hired. Lester originally filmed the whole thing as a big 3-hour epic (which would certainly have been the best version of Dumas ever, because some of the 'serious' versions just miss the point: these two films weren't 'spoofs' but capture what the thing IS) and the whole production team and cast were under that delusion. He released it as TWO movies though, which resulted in big protests from his crew and actors re fees etc.. Maybe Legrand was part of the revolt?

Actually, it's a trilogy along with the less effective 'Return of the Musketeers' made 20 years after (based on 'Twenty Years After') but that prod. was dampened greatly by the death of Planchet (Roy Kinnear) who was killed falling of a horse during shooting. Revisiting past successes is rarely wise.

I know there's been a CD of Legrand's score (I only have the vinyl issue) but it could be a "^^%^%%-legg?" And the Schifrin suite of course.

It's a trilogy, and a trilogy of scores would be nice on a 2CD by someone.

Not just protests, but lawsuits -- lots and lots of lawsuits, which was par for the course for anyone and everyone who had the misfortune to work on an Alexander and Ilya Salkind production (I wrote most of the biographies in the supplemental section of Anchor Bay's THREE / FOUR MUSKETEERS DVDs).

Dammit, I have only the Region 2 'Momentum' releases. Are they re-issues? I haven't checked.

Legrand's Three Musketeers score could certainly do with a reissue -- that Bay Cities CD was so smothered in noise reduction it is almost unlistenable.

Now I could be wrong (and with the amount of stuff we/I read here it can be expected) but I seem to remember someone posting here that they came accross the tapes for 4 musketeers and sent them back to Schifrin.Anyone else recall this or even correct it.

I believe that's true, seems somebody posted that news last fall. I've still got the Ent'racte lp released in 1977 or 78, paired with THE EAGLE HAS LANDED.

Yes, my friend Roger, who worked at the late Arons Records, found several reels of recordings from "The Four".
Lucas contacted Lalo, and the tapes were returned.

That's great! It was a fine score by Lalo and they were great films. I must confess though, that Legrand's has always been one of my favourite scores of all time. Surely they both must get a new lease.

Also it's worth noting that Schifrin used some of his music in his Guitar concerto too.So if you can't get the 4 Ms then try that.

As I remember, THREE/FOUR MUSKETEERS were Warner Bros. releases; I would like to see Aleph issue a new cd of the latter. It's a fine score.

No, the films were originally released by Fox (who do not own them now).

Remember it is the Salkinds. We all know the way they treated Richard Donner for Superman 1 and 2. Well they had great practice of screwing folks out of what they deserved. They had film'd Three and Fourth together. Had enough material for two flics, BUT didn't tell any of the actors. They got pissed and lawsuit followed.

Well after the wonderful Salkind's did this, they said everyone let's get together and make Superman, and NOT pay anyone for the second one. LOL. They Dick'd Dick Donner, and brought in the other Dick, Dick Lester. But over twenty years later, after countless lawsuits, and forgiveness. The Salkind's kissed Dick Donner's Ass and all is forgiven.

And still to this day, The Salkind's still owe many people monies for Superman 1 and 2. End of Story.

Return had a score by Jean-Claude Petit with a marvelous theme. I saw the thing once and can still recall the end credits music.

That's Salkinds (plural), Salkind's (possessive singular), and Salkinds' (possessive plural).

Hey Scorro, I hope this doesn't anger you, but I kindly and respectfully
suggest that the spelling and grammar lessons be diminished a little. Please?
I think your lessons may hinder discussions rather than clarify them,
and here is why.

1. We all make mistakes, no matter how carefully we write. The other day
I wrote a friend an e mail and noticed later that I had quickly written "threw" when
I meant "through." The reality was that I was in a hurry, and the mistake slipped
by my usually discerning eyes.

2. Solid, coherent writing is a long process of drafting that includes writing freely
to let initial ideas flow. Then we must edit drafts, polish language, rewrite, and finally
produce a written product that is fit to be published or handed in to a teacher for grading.
To me, THIS place is a chat room, not a place for publication, and most of us don't have
the time to do more than free write. Drafting, rewriting, and relentless editing would take too
much valuable time and keep us from posting.

3. I've seen you make mistakes, but I wouldn't dream of pointing them out because
I understand your message regardless of a misspelled word or misplaced comma.
You communicate, and I understand your communication, and that is what counts.

If people are blasting us and are totally illogical in their arguments, then I think
we need to point out that their writing is NOT communicating; hence, the message
is not understood due to the writing. I think that is okay. On the other hand,
I don't wish to see people fearful of just quickly free writing their ideas because
an Internet red pen might be scouring their messages for a minute error that any
of us here can make. I'd just rather see ideas expressed freely. (This is just my humble
opinion for your consideration.)

Not true. Everyone the Salkind's intended to keep was paid handsomely for SUPERMAN II. What monies were owed on SUPERMAN 1 and 2?

I have read stuff online by Jack O'Halloran who played NON in SUPERMAN II that suggested the Salkinds had a defered payment thing going on with SANTA CLAUS THE MOVIE. Apparently it crushed Pinewood studios. Anyone know the truth behind that one? Little is ever mentioned (unlike the infamous politics of MUSKETEERS, SUPERMAN and CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS THE DISCOVERY).
