One of Burt Bacharach's best, and least-known, songs is "Nikki" which he wrote as a tribute to his daughter when she was born to Bacharach and Angie Dickinson. The song later became the theme for the ABC Sunday Night Movie.
Yesterday, I saw a news article which said Nikki Bacharach committed suicide in January at the age of 40. She suffered from Asperger's Syndrome which may be related to autism. A family spokesman said she had "intense physical problems."

The definitive version of "Nikki" is by guitarist Vinnie Bell, known for his underwater guitar sound. It is on his Decca album "Airport and other Love Themes," available at a thrift store near you.

Wow. I love that Theme. It appears on a Burt Lp which I bought years ago. The green one, ONE LESS BELL TO ANSWER.

Sad to hear that terrible news. My heart goes out to Burt and Angie, Family and Friends.

May Nikki Rest in Peace.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Somewhere there is sunshine.
Somewhere days are warm.
Somewhere there's a happy harbor
far from the storm.
Out where the sun shines there is someone
I'm meant to adore,
and I know the day I find her,
I'll smile once more.

Nikki, it's you.
Nikki, where can you be?
It's you, no one but you for me
I've been so lonely since you went away.
I won't spend a happy day
'til you're back in my arms.

For ev'ry dream there is a dreamer,
and when dreams are gone,
for each wish
another star shines to wish up on.
Take all my dreams and all my wishes
Hold them in your heart.
Tell me soon we'll be together,
never to part.

Nikki, it's you.
Nikki, where can you be?
It's you, no one but you for me
I've been so lonely since you went away.
I won't spend a happy day
'til you're back in my arms.

Don't make me wait here in the shadows
till my life is done.
I can't live without the sunshine,
you are the sun.

Oh Nikki, it's you.

Thanks Zoob for posting the lyrics. I'm very familiar with the instrumental and only heard Burt perform this once on television back in the seventies.

I am always sad to hear of someone dying so young.

I skipped over the lyrics. It's such a perfect instrumental I don't want to ruin the experience.

Did Hal David write the lyrics?
Also, was the song ever recorded with the lyrics?

No credit I can find lists a lyricist, so I would bet Burt personally wrote them himself for his Daughter. I've never heard or seen a Vocal version.

ONYABIRRI:

Thanks for the link....that's a great dose of nostalgia (which explains my buying binge of Bacharach and Tijuana Brass CDs).

Don't forget Brasil 66!

ONYABIRRI:

Yep, I bought a few Brasil '66 CDs, too. On the A&M website, I see that Herb Alpert and wife Lani Hall (former Brasil 66 singer) are still performing together. Hall has one fine voice.

It was Hal David who wrote the lyrics. This was confirmed in Nikki Bacharach's obituary:

JAMES PHILLIPS:

Thanks for the informative article.
I assume the song with lyrics was never recorded and released.

You can purchase a recording of it on iTunes from the Burt Bacharach Collection:

http://www.answers.com/topic/the-look-of-love-the-burt-bacharach-collection-uk?cat=entertainment

It lists Hal David as the lyricist, and is performed by Burt, but doesn't say if he does it as a piano solo with his "singing" (I prefer using the term vocal rendition since he is not known for his singing ability), or accompanied with an orchestra. If you can download the song, let us know.
