I like Solomon and Sheba a lot...not a great film but one of my guilty pleasures. Great cinematography, exotic + memorable music, Gina in all her great costumes(or lack thereof),etc. I dont think that Tyrone Power would have been better than Yul, just different. In stills , he also looks a bit too old to be playing the younger son of King David. Several clips from the Power version were shown on the series THATS HOLLYWOOD around 1980. It is shame the Power footage has not been assembled and released such as the abandeoned 30s production of I,Claudius. Today with computer technology, the Power S&S probably could be finished . If you are interested , you can find a brief clip from the Tyrone Power version on YouTube - it does seem that his version would have been more sympathetic. Brynner had the script rewritten in part to fit his persona better. In fact, the scene on youtube with Power from S&S is not in the Brynner version. Even as the completed film stands , I still find pleasures in S&S - I cannot believe some find it to be "grim" - it has so many lavish scenes - as with most epics, S&S worked much better on the big screen in Technirama . When I first saw it in 1959 at the Woods in Chicago, the theater was packed for a Sunday matinee-- I think that it actually was quite successful at the box office . souvenir programs were sold in the lobby for it , too.
