Watched Captain EO on Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_wFMPUM9A0&mode=related&search=) the musical score by James Horner is simply brilliant I am curious if an official release is possible! Are the rights owned by Disney? Or Michael Jackson? Saw a b**t on the internet with some score tracks but I am afraid this is copied from the poor VHS quality, am I right?

Right. But I've seen two version so far. One bootleg is a rip from VHS with all the sfx etc and is simply the whole show ripped in audio format and the second version is a promo or whatever and contains opening about 1 minute long and then some Jackson songs - not sure if this one is a pressed CD or not.

Also there is about 5 minutes of score max as far as I remember.

5-minutes of score what harm can be done, bring it on then, maybe on some sort of compilation, would be great!

Haven't seen that since a trip to Disneyland in the '80's... honestly, it's hopelessly more lame than I remember it EVER being!!! Time has not been kind.

Pt 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3veG6quFUEE
Pt 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7JO5kQXT2U

Though, Horner's score is quite good and very reminiscent of the better body of work that he was doing during the mid '80's. Would great if Eric Kunzel would find a way to perform this for one of his TELARC releases.

There are already TWO official releases of Horner's "Captain EO" of which I'm aware.
They're called "Star Trek III" and "Aliens."

Ba-DUM-bum.

(--What! Someone had to say it . . .)

"Captain EO- ever possible on cd?"=)

Only if you get DISNEY MUSIC PUBLISHING to allow you to do a new recording and are willing to pay to have it done....

That's your best and only shot at this time.

Wow, thanks for sharing those clips! I had never even HEARD of this thing before, and was AMAZED to see that talents such as Francis Ford Coppola, Anjelica Huston and James Horner were attached to this piece of 80's crap.

Still, though, it has some pretty decent Jackson songs from his prime. But an actor he is not.

Jesus....Francis directed this! I still can't believe it. eek

I saw it once at Epcot Center, probably in the late 80s or early 90s. I didn't recall any of it, but upon seeing it here on YouTube, I should call up my parents and tell them I'm sorry I made them go through that. I can't believe how bad the songs are. They sound like something that took 15 minutes to write and record.

I still have the pair of "souvenir" (cough) 3D glasses that I watched it with...

You were supposed to leave the glasses in that big barrel at the exit.

I still have hopes even if it is only a couple of minutes of score, I really love it!

Disney has put out many pieces from their theme-park attractions that I frankly never thought would make it to CD. I suppose this could be one of them at some point. The attraction is no longer being shown, of course, but perhaps MJ's passing will inspire some kind of interest in it.

I would guess the songs would be the main draw for any CD release, though, and then if we're lucky the score will be included.

Jesus....Francis Ford Coppola directed CAPTAIN EO!
I still can't believe it. eek

Martin Scorsese directed BAD
John Landis directed THRILLER

The King, in his prime, did have some serious pull before he did MOONWALKER.

Colin Chilvers, the special effects supervisor of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies directed a lot of Moonwalker.

Note that Vittorio Storaro, ILM and Harrison Ellenshaw were all involved in Captain Eo too.

David Fincher did one of the Dangerous videos, too, as well as post box office peak John Landis.

Note that Bret Ratner directed one of the more recent MJ videos.

Speaking of Moonwalker, I would much rather have Bruce Broughton's score to that film, than Captain EO.

I wonder if a Disney "bits & pieces" sort of CD would be feasible. Are any of the scores from the Roger Rabbit cartoon shorts on CD yet, for instance? Would those make a good match with Horner's EO score and . . . what other Disney miscellany?

Say . . . while I'm thinking of it, would FSM ever release a Disney score, the way Intrada has done?

Disney releases "bits and pieces" CDs all the time! They're called "The Official Album of Disneyland/Walt Disney World" and there's a new one almost every year. Their content has become increasingly daring in the past decade, and with the recent return of Captain EO to Disneyland park, there's really no reason they couldn't put Horner's brief but magnificent score on one of those CDs.

I wouldn't expect to see any Michael Jackson songs, but with their parade/event/attraction-specific CDs at the parks nowadays, a whole CD dedicated to Captain EO wouldn't be out of line either. And with the 'on demand' technology Disney owns, they could make small runs to fit sales.

Horner's score to this film has always been a favorite of mine. As a child, I just loved walking into the EPCOT Center theater and hearing Horner's mesmerizing "cosmos theme" looping while guests took their seats.

Maybe someone over at MiceChat or LaughingPlace could put a bug in Randy Thornton's ear and get this magnificent music released...

Michael

Knowing Disney, *if* this is gonna be released, they'll release it on iTunes. Hopefully in 16bit@44100 or better. And internationally.
