Thelma Ritter in Pickup on South Street and Rear Window

I would also say Margaret Dumont in all of the Marx Brothers movies, but she was only in her 40's for most of those movies.

Can't forget Lucille Watson:

Ample, feisty old lady, seen in everything from THE RAZOR'S EDGE to WATCH ON THE RHINE to the MGM LITTLE WOMEN, and even Walt Disney's SONG OF THE SOUTH.

That lady got around....

And Florence Bates:

Putting out her cigarette in the cold cream in REBECCA

Demanding Joseph Cotten's rent in PORTRAIT OF JENNIE

Practically salivating over recipes she hears from Irene Dunne in I REMEMBER MAMA

even an ethnic turn as a no-nonsense island woman in THE MOON AND SIXPENCE

or, my favorite, allowing herself to be charmed by Gene Kelley in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, where she says, "My husband's always so fussy about the way I smell."

Wonderful.

Nedra Volz bouncing and tumbling at the edge of the bed while a couple are doing it ("Moving Violations", 1985)

Billie Burke's hilarious performance in "The Young Philadelphians" (1959)

Sorry, John.....your "smelly" customer in AN AMERICAN IN PARIS is not Florence Bates, it's Madge Blake.

She's wonderful in this, but she's superb as the Louella Parsons-ish radio interviewer of Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen at the red carpet premiere their latest film at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.

The Jean Simmons movie HOME BEFORE DARK had an awesome collection of little old ladies in it.

They were probably the best reason to watch the movie, besides the photography by Joseph Biroc, and some of the performances.

I haven't looked up their names yet. Maybe some of you can identify them.

This one's Eleanor Audley

(aka the voice of Maleficent).

We can't forget Jessie Royce Landis. Grace Kelly's mother in TO CATCH A THIEF ("Avez vous Bourbon?"); Cary Grant's mother in NORTH BY NORTHWEST ("Roger, will you be coming home for dinner?"). I also remember her cameo in AIRPORT, trying to smuggle a fur coat through customs.

And of course Norma Shearer's wise mother in THE WOMEN.

My choice would be my all time favorite actress:

Kathleen Freeman

I find her body of work sublime -- she never failed in a role. And she was by all accounts, including stories from some of my best friends, a joy to work with -- generous, giving, and an absolute professional. I love her!

It's very possible that the little old lady to beat is none other than Marion Lorne,

twice being the epicenter of everything in:

in STRANGERS ON A TRAIN

and BEWITCHED
