Hi everyone,

Got mine today. What a fantastic score. Barry was so creative and in-tune with movies then. And of course never short of a wonderful theme or two.

I'm loving Jon Burlingame and Nick Redman's comments.

Cheers

Oh! I forgot all about this release! Thanks for reminding me! smile

Is the isolated score in stereo?

Oh nuts, Burlingame and Redman on another isolated DVD commentary? I had no idea, I am so there! And it's Barry, which is wonderful.

The advance specs for the disc say that both films are in mono. They were originaly stereo in theaters.
Are both films really stereo on this disc?

The LP is a very good representation of the complete score, so a CD release would come down from heaven.

Alex

P.S: It definitely isn't one of Barry's longest scores, by far.

It's about 45 minutes long. It's a very bitty score in that so many cues are so short. But a great score nonetheless, which seems longer than it actually is.

I just watched the movie and noticed *a lot* of very short cues. I can imagine an expanded release being a disjointed album with poor flow. So as short as the LP was, perhaps it was probably the best listening experience!

I agree. Like I said, the LP is a good representation. It sure needs a CD release, though.

I agree but in this day and age, if the expanded score was available, it'd have to be released as the full monty. Though they are short, some of those cues are great. Arguably, many expanded scores are less satisfying "album" experiences than the shortened versions but we're in an age where people are listening to these things less as albums and more as complete score entities.

I think that the original album of Star Trek The Motion Picture is a better album programme than the expanded score, but I'd not be without my expanded Star Trek.

That said, if the album was the only thing available for licensing, it would be a great thing to bring out.

Cheers

Yes, "Mary" is a wonderful score. In fact, I dare say one of Barry's very best.

A friend recently spent some time ripping the isolated score & making notes & observations
about the music. Here they are below.

"Track 3 from the original soundtrack album, "But Not Through My Realm" consists of two separate cues; the first section is the film's "Overture" (apx 1.10) and the second section is what I have termed "Holyrood Palace" (apx 1.22).

There are three music cues used in the film that are not heard on the isolated score:

1)a short choral piece used during the lying-in-state of Mary's first husband, Francois.

2)a traditonal bagpipe tune used when Mary's half-brother, the Earl of Moray escorts her
through Holyrood Palace. However, this cue is on the original soundtrack album (it is the 2nd section of "But Not Through My Realm" track). For the sake of completeness, I have used a mono version of this cue and placed it in its chronological position within
the isolated score. For clarity reasons, I have re-titled it "Holyrood Palace"(track 13).

03)a lute played by David Rizzio. This comes immediately after the "Holyrood Palace" cue.

There is a music cue during the "Intermission" sequence on the dvd. However as this is the same exact piece of music as the "Overture" (ie. same recording) I have left it out. If you wish to re-insert it to its proper position, it should be placed between tracks 21 & 22.

track 30 "Darnley Betrayed" is merely the first .40 seconds of the previous cue (track 29 "Mary Drugs Darnley - Mary & Bothwell") repeated.

track 35 "Treachery of These Times" is also a repeated cue. It contains the last .45 seconds of the previous cue (track 34 "They’re All Around Us").

track listing:
01 Overture (But Not Through My Realm - part 1)
02 Main Titles (Vivre et Mourir)
03 Elizabeth & Robin
04 Message for Elizabeth
05 Bring Dudley to Trial
06 Francois in Extremis
07 Death of Francois
08 Duc de Guise - Family Counsel
09 Goodbye Dear France (Journey to Scotland)
10 Arrival in Leith
11 Moray's Deceit - Elizabeth & Her Courtiers
12 Ambitious Lord - To Edinburgh
13 Holyrood Palace (But Not Through My Realm - part 2)
14 Mary & Darnley
15 May it Please God
16 We are Outcasts
17 Wedding
18 I Need Your Help Bothwell (Mary's Theme)
19 Hawking
20 Lords of the Congregation
21 Covenant
22 Murder of Rizzio Part 1
23 Murder of Rizzio Part 2
24 The Lords Depart - Subterfuge (Black Night)
25 Fleeing Holyrood (Escape with Bothwell)
26 Delivered of a Fair Son
27 Victory at Dunbar (March to the Castle)
28 Fragile Alliance

This really is a Major thing with me as well, want to have the best listening experience. Some off extra tracks that you get added on many cds are not cohe'sive to making them a better listening experience.
Nice to see some of the new big releases having original album versions as well as the new expanded versions, alien wind and the lion.

The perfect thing would be a complete release with both the film tracks and the re-issued album.
Of course, it will never happen.

Well, let's face it. Barry is not as good-selling as Goldsmith is.
