.....This is wonderful music by Victor Young. But I think the only reasonably lengthy version is that old Stanyan CD conducted by Heindorf. Is that all there is (apart from a few very short suites on some compilation discs)? Are the original tracks lost now? I assume that's the reason for this great score's neglect. If so, surely we need a Stromberg/Morgan re-recording sometime soon..... Earlier than the Stanyan recording by Heindorf (which is quite good), Victor Young himself recorded an album for Decca back in the 1943-44 period of the film's release. It contained six or eight 78rpm sides, and was conducted by Young (with the Paramount Studio Orchestra, I think). In the early '50s this was reissued on Decca as an LP, paired with either Young's GOLDEN EARRINGS (also originally a 78rpm album) or SAMSON AND DELILAH (another 78rpm original release.) Because Young was at home in the recording industry apart from his film scores, he managed to get a small number of his scores recorded in the '40s-'50s period, where others didn't. As for the film, as Shicorp has indicated, it is a Paramount Picture now owned by Universal. (There is a nice DVD out on the film.) And regarding original music tracks, it's my impression that nothing but the film picture and track negatives for the Paramount films ever went to Universal (MCA) in the library sale, so there is likely nothing from the Paramount '30s and '40s films in the Universal vaults to pull music from, other than a few acetates which turn up independently from time to time (like THE UNINVITED).
