I did read something, I think it is in the Mancini book "Did they Mention the Music?".
Hank stated that at the recording sessions, the orchestra was on already on stage when the violin soloist walked in. That of course was the very famous (among fiddle players) Stephane Grapelli. Quoting Mancini: "A door opened at the back of thr studio. It was wintertime, and Stephane entered in a hat and coat with his fiddle under his arm. The orchestra was facing the door All the string players began tapping their bows on their violins the moment they saw who it was, their accolade for a great artist." My own personal story - my wife and I had the theme played at our wedding in 1973. We didn't really like the movie that much, but we both really loved Mancini's song. Bill Finn
