Hi everyone. FSM did us Barry fans a great favour when it released a mono copy of Monte Walsh. At the time, I believe a stereo / multi-track master for Monte Walsh was not available. I've been told by a huge Barry fan today that a stereo or multi-track Monte Walsh has since been found. Is this true? Can anyone confirm? Cheers

[...]given that the FSM release hasn't sold out yet. Perhaps for a 1000 limited run? Alex As a matter of fact, it's sold out now.

As a matter of fact, it's sold out now. After how many years? Alex After 8 1/2 years (June '99).

There goes the stereo release. Alex Limited to a 1000 items. That would be a sure sell-out.

Guys, first of all we still don't have confirmation that those stereo tapes were found. That's what I'm looking for. And Alex, though it may have taken 8 years for Monte Walsh to sell out, selling out is still pretty good. There are many CDs that are older than that that haven't! Cheers

Did anyone ever find out whether stereo tracks of this score were found? This is crucial information to me. I have a chance at a mint copy of the FSM release, but would rather wait for stereo if that becomes a possibility.

I would assume not. I imagine what I was told back in 2007 was fabricated. And even if it wasn't, if no one's done it yet, I wouldn't hold my breath.

We went through all the tapes at UCLA in the CBS collection and they were all mono. Lukas

The stereo question is moot now. This was available in not only mint, but new and sealed condition at Amoeba for an extremely reasonable price. The price I paid is worth "The John Barry Saloon"--five tracks covering almost fifteen minutes--all by itself. Kudos to Mr. Kendall and the gang.

I am now the proud owner of a new copy of the FSM CD, yet one who will not be in proximity to my playback equipment for awhile. I have never seen this film and have only heard the excellent suite from Nic Raine/Prague Phil. Would Stephen Woolston or any other fan please tell me what I can expect, sound-and-performance-wise? Are the Mama Cass tracks in stereo maybe? I've heard the single of this tune on satellite/streaming radio and it sounds pretty good.

It sounds great for both sound and performance. What else can I say? I love the fact the score is so ... 'musical' (as weird as that might sound to say) ... and that it's rooted in one of those sweetly Autumn-of-life, melancholy songs created in the wake of 'We Have All The Time In The World'. And at the risk of being dreary, there's a lot of Bond-ish stuff too. The tense, climactic cue "Sit Him High" could easily have been the stuff of a Bond movie. I actually think "MONTE WALSH" represents almost everything that was great about John Barry in his heyday, even if it's not as famous as other titles. Cheers

Thanks, Stephen.

The single recorded for record release is in stereo (last track on the FSM CD). All of the other Mama Cass and orchestra score recordings made at CBS for the movie are in mono. Lukas

I think the suite that Silva recorded of it is quite lovely (and it's in stereo ). I do miss those couple of notes in the opening harmonica theme.
