I'm looking for lyrics to some of Tiomkin's songs and aside from one site (now missing) I've found little that's helpful.

Specifically, I'm looking for all the lyrics to "Search for Paradise Finale" (all of them aren't in Palmer's liner notes), and if possible "Red River."

Anyone got a lead on these?

This has some spelling errors, but . . .

This guy does a better job, I think:

I haven't had a chance to check these against my CD yet. Are there more lyrics in the film than on the album? Or were more lyrics written than were recorded? (I'm trying to figure out what you mean by full-length.)

I found this amusing paragraph regarding "Red River" at Roger Hall and Steven Kennedy's FILM MUSIC REVIEW. It's from a review of the European release of Stromberg's 2002 re-recording:

This Main Title is truly one of the best remembered western themes. Unfortunately, that's where my biggest reservation takes place on the Marco Polo CD. The diction by the Russian choir is not very good. What makes matters worse is the missing words in the CD booklet for the wonderful "Settle Down Little Doggies" choral opening. But I've recently heard from a friend that the text is not available anywhere and nobody knows for sure what it should be. I listened to the Hall Johnson Choir singing the choral opening in the film and couldn't really understand them either. I suppose RED RIVER fans don't need these words. But it would be helpful to state somewhere in the CD notes that it's unknown just what the words should be for "Settle Down." To their credit, the Russian choir sings this jaunty theme with great enthusiasm throughout the score.

. . . I think Mr. Stromberg posts here sometimes, right? Maybe he could dig up the old charts and post us the lyrics. Were they singing in English or Russian, Bill?

When Tadlow recorded the "Legend" they came up with more lyrics than I was previously aware of, describing the individual members of the team. I thought I'd post here before sending an email to Mr. Fitzpatrick. The other cues I mentioned are simply hard to make out. In particular, Christopher Palmer's liner notes for SEARCH FOR PARADISE leave out the last verse! When I read what the first verses were, I realized I'd never have guessed them on my own. They're, ah, unique to say the least.

Well, this brings back memories! I don't think I put this in the liner notes in fear of being hung, but the words were not written down on any of the music...score, choral, sketches...no where, and we had access to all the material Tiomkin kept. Most of it was easy to hear and understand and fit the notes, but there was one area where we just couldn't make out what they were saying with definitive clarity. We had the original acetates, but as I remember, the choral parts were overdubbed. Bill and I finally made up what we thought this stanza should have been with words that were appropriate and seemed to rhyme. Maybe we hit it and maybe not, but we had to do something. I remember one critic said we hit the mark on this as our version was just a unintelligible as the original. Faint praise, indeed.

That's quite a collection, Ron. Here's what I have for SEARCH FOR PARADISE from the original soundtrack and as recorded by Elmer Bernstein (and sometimes lyrics evolve from one recording to another):

Shalimar
Lyrics by Ned Washington (and Lowell Thomas), Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Take me to Shalimar garden
Where all is so radiant;
Shalimar calls me, Shalimar calls me.

Little I care what fate befalls me;
If there is bliss,
It is this, it is this, it is this.

Grant me the joys that enchant me,
The joys indescribable found in that valley,
Take me to Shalimar.

Oh, love, what fabulous dreams we could dream!
Why can't we dream them together?

I know and stars in the sky know
My heart has to answer
When Shalimar calls me, Shalimar calls me now.

Shalimar was made for love,
Love forever.
Made for hearts that prayed for love,
Love forever.

...and:

Come Ye Discontented (Happy Hunza Valley)
Lyrics by Ned Washington and Lowell Thomas, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Come ye discontented,
Come and search for paradise.
Someday you will find it
If you try.

Free from the world of material things,
Free to unfold on adventurous wings
Come ye, come and journey to the sight.
Find it, yes, oh find it - paradise, paradise!

Somewhere in the distance
There's a promise of a dream-like existence,
Somewhere in the nowhere
Far away.

Yours to discover and to make it your own,
Yours to uncover and know the unknown,
All ye discontented come and search for paradise!

Happy Land Of Hunza
Lyrics by Ned Washington and Lowell Thomas, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Nobody has too little, nobody has too much
That's always been the happy land of Hunza, Hunza.

In everything around you you see the Maker's art
The human race could use a place like Hunza, Hunza.

The skies are ever-blue and sorrow is taboo
There's only room for happiness in Hunza, Hunza.

In every living thing you see the look of spring
The breeze is like a warm embrace
You lose all fear of time and place in Hunza.

Kashmir
Lyrics by Ned Washington, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

The Shakari boat you can run real cheap,
She don't eat up gasoline like a car or Jeep,
She don't need no engine nor piston rings
But if she starts leaking you may need water wings!

Kashmir, Kashmir!
Life is joy, life is finest here!
Kashmir, Kashmir!
Perfect paradise this time of year!

For the boat is house and the house is boat,
If the neighbors are too noisy, just make this note:
You untie the house from the place it stood
And you float away into a new neighborhood!

Kashmir, Kashmir!
Life is joy, life is finest here!
Kashmir, Kashmir!
Perfect paradise this time of year!

Don't be fast, don't be quick,
You'll be tired, you'll be sick,
Take it easy and things come your way.
If it's good, it will wait,
If it can't, that is fate!
There'll be much better days than today!

Would you like to take up your residence
Where a man can get a haricut for seven cents?
Not a penny less nor a penny more,
But if you're bald-headed they might cut it for four.

Kashmir, Kashmir!
Life is joy, life is finest here!
Kashmir, Kashmir!
Perfect paradise this time of year!

Elmer Bernstein's recording adds this verse:
Lowell Thomas* found when he reached Kashmir
That we have a local Buckingham Palace here.
If you get to occupy the royal wing
For a couple of rupees you can live like a king!

(*Lowell Thomas was the writer/producer/narrator of the film)
...and:

Epliogue
Lyrics by Ned Washington, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

On silver wings
With a spirit that forever sings
And a disliking for all the ordinary earthly things,
Into far distant sky
Where the eagle wouldn't try to fly,
On the way to the stars
For a close look at Mars,
Off we go!

Off the ground, free are we,
Skyward bound, glory be, glory be, glory be!
Over land, over sea,
We defy gravity!
This is our destiny!

In yonder skies the Aurora Borealis lies
Beautiful on the eyes
[. . .]
Off into infinity.

Somewhere in the distance
There's a promise of a dream-like existence,
Somewhere in the nowhere
It is there.

Somewhere in the distance
There's a promise of a dream-like existence,
Somewhere in the nowhere
It is there, it is there!

Search for paradise, for paradise, for paradise!
Search, search, search!

You're not going to get lyrics like that any more. If you are able to make any corrections, I'd be grateful.

55 DAYS AT PEKING
Theme from the film "55 Days At Peking" (1963)
(Dimitri Tiomkin / Paul Francis Webster)

The Brothers Four - 1963
Richard Chamberlain - 1963
Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen - 1963

Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom, bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom

The year was Nineteen-Hundred
T'is worth remembering
The men who lived through
Fifty-five days at Peking

T'was called the Boxer Insurrection
A bloody, Oriental war
Against all nations
Of the Diplomatic Corps

The flags of France and Britain
How they fluttered in the breeze
The Italian and the Russian
And the flag of the Japanese

Then came the sound of bugles
The rolling drums of doom
And the streets of Peking
Were as empty as a tomb

Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom, bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom

The Empress of all China
Gave the signal to begin
Let the foreign devils
Be driven from Peking

They stormed the French Ligation
They attacked with shot and shell
And they came in blood red blouses
Screaming “Shachaw!” as they fell

The drums have long been muffled
The bugles cease to ring
But through the ages
You can hear them echoing

Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom, bom-bom-bom
Fifty-five days at Peking

Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom, bom-bom-bom
Fifty-five days at Peking

Bom-bom-bom-bom-bom-bom
Bom-bom-bom.........FADE

Ed, here are the lyrics straight from the lyric sheets, courtesy of Warner Bros., Inc. It looks like you have a couple of stanzas that I don't have and vice versa. And there were a few word changes between your lyrics and mine. I'll be glad to send you a copy of the sheet music, if you would like it. E-mail me privately at: BurbellaRon@cs.com

KASHMIR (Tiomkin - Washington/Thomas)

REFRAIN:

KASHMIR! KASHMIR!
Life is gay; Life is full of cheer!
KASHMIR! Oh, KASHMIR!
Cut-rate paradise this time of year!

Don't be fast; don't be quick.
You'll get tired; you'll get sick.
Take it easy and things come your way.

If it's good, it will wait.
If it can't, that is fate.
There'll be much better days than today.

5 STANZAS:

Are you tired of work and the traffic jam?
Do you jump a country mile if a door should slam?
If your nerves are shaky, then the time is here
For a short vacation in the vale of KASHMIR!

Oh, the Kashmir life is the easy way.
When it's time for you to leave, you will want to stay.
And, unless you're careful and your will is strong,
You'll be going native if you stay very long!

You don't need a house, just a six-room boat.
If the neighbors are too noisy, just make this note:
You untie the building from the place it stood,
And you float away into a new neighborhood!

The Shakari boat you can run real cheap.
She don't eat gasoline like a car or jeep.
She don't need a steering wheel or piston rings.
But, if she starts leaking, you may need water-wings!

In the Chenar tree sits the Bulbul bird
And he makes the sweetest sounds that you ever heard.
Even Marco Polo, he explored it twice,
Or the girls are pretty and the climate is nice!

**************************************************************************************

SHALIMAR (Tiomkin - Washington/Thomas)

REFRAIN:

Take me to Shalimar gardens.
My heart is obedient.
Shalimar calls me; Shalimar calls me.
Little I care what fate befalls me.

If there is bliss,
It is this, it is this, it is this.

Grant me the joys that enchant me.
The joys indescribable found in that valley.
Take me to Shalimar.

Oh, love...what fabulous dreams we could dream!

Love forever.

Re-posting for correction "Or" should have been "For" in the last stanza. Spell-checker missed it and it made no sense when I read my own post!

Thanks, Ron! It's really interesting to see the variations between the sheet music and the Bernstein recordings. I've never seen the film, nor have I heard the SEARCH FOR PARADISE cd that came out a few years back, so the sheet music is a great resource. Maybe someone will re-record the score for us one of these days.

Here's some lyrics in honor of SAE's new HIGH NOON cd:

Main Titles: Do Not Forsake Me
Lyrics by Ned Washington, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
On this our wedding day
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Wait, wait along

I do not know what fate awaits me
I ony know I must be brave
For I must face a man who hates me
Or lie a coward, a craven coward
Or lie a coward in my grave

Oh to be torn 'twixt love and duty
Supposin' I lose my fair-haried beauty?
Look at the big hand move along
Nearin' high noon

He made a vow while in State's prison
Vowed it would be my life or his, an'
I'm not afraid of death but, oh,
What shall I do if you leave me?

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise when we wed
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin'
I can't be leavin'
Until I kill Frank MIller dead.
Wait along, wait along
Wait along, wait along.

Alternate final verse for commercial release:

Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
You made that promise as a bride
Do not forsake me, oh my darlin'
Although you're grievin'
Don't think of leavin'
Now that I need you by my side
Wait along, wait along
Wait along, wait along.

The Ballad Of The Alamo
Music by Dimitri Tiomkin, lyrics by Paul Francis Webster

In the southern part of Texas, near the town of San Antone,
Stands a fortress all in ruins that the weeds have overgrown.
You may look in vain for crosses and you'll never see a one.
But sometime between the setting and the rising of the sun,
You can hear a ghostly bugle as the men go marching by,
You can hear them as they answer to that roll call in the sky:
Colonel Travis, Davy Crockett and a hundred-eighty more;
Captain Dickenson and Jim Bowie present and accounted for!

Let the old men tell the story, let the legend grow and grow
Of the thirteen days of glory at the seige of Alamo.
Lift the tattered banners proudly while the eyes of Texas shine -
Let the fort that was a mission be an everlasting shrine.
Once they fought to give us freedom that is all we need to know
Of the 13 days of glory at the seige of Alamo.

Every musket is ready, every hand holds a sword -
Just a small band of soldiers standing tall in the eyes of the Lord.

single version:

In the southern part of Texas, near the town of San Antone,
Stands a fortress all in ruins that the weeds have overgrown.
You may look in vain for crosses and you'll never see a one.
But sometime between the setting and the rising of the sun
You can hear a ghostly bugle as the men go marching by,
You can hear them as they answer to that roll call in the sky:
Colonel Travis, Davy Crockett and a hundred-eighty more;
Captain Dickenson and Jim Bowie present and accounted for!

Back in 1836, Houston said to Travis:
"Get some volunteers and go fortify the Alamo."
Well, the men came from Texas and from old Tennessee,
And they joined up with Travis just to fight for the right to be free.

Injun scouts with squirrel guns, men with muzzle loaders,
Stood together heel and toe to defend the Alamo.
"You may ne'er see your loved ones," Travis told them that day.
"Those that want to can leave now, those who'll fight to the death, let 'em stay."

In the sand he drew a line with his army sabre,
Out of a hundred eighty five, not a soldier crossed the line.
With his banners a-dancin' in the dawn's golden light,
Santa Anna came prancin' on a horse that was black as the night.

He sent an officer to tell Travis to surrender.
Travis answered with a shell and a rousin' rebel yell.
Santa Anna turned scarlet: "Play Degüello," he roared.
"I will show them no quarter, everyone will be put to the sword!"

One hundred and eighty nine holdin' back five thousand.
Five days, six days, eight days, ten; Travis held and held again.
Then he sent for replacements for his wounded and lame,
But the troops that were comin' never came, never came, never came.

Twice he charged, then blew recall. On the fatal third time,
Santa Anna breached the wall and he killed them one and all.
Now the bugles are silent and there's rust on each sword,
And the small band of soldiers lie asleep in the arms of the Lord.

In the southern part of Texas, near the town of San Antone,
Like a statue on his Pinto rides a cowboy all alone.
And he sees the cattle grazin' where a century before,
Santa Anna's guns were blazin' and the cannons used to roar.
And his eyes turn sort of misty, and his heart begins to glow,
And he takes his hat off slowly to the men of Alamo.
To the thirteen days of glory at the seige of Alamo.

Here's To The Ladies
lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Here's to the ladies, I love 'em all,
Here's to the ones I recall.
Here's to the ladies, married or free,
They all look prettier to me!

The big and small ones, the short and tall ones,
Each one a lovely Valentine.
So here's to the ladies, I love the ladies;
Oh, how I wish they all were mine!

The fat or lean ones, the in-between ones,
From seventeen to eighty-nine.
Here's to the ladies, I love the ladies;
Oh, how I wish they all were mine!

Tennessee Babe
Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Tennessee babe with a sweet-sounding name, dear little rose of the South,
You are so sweet that the neighbors all claim sugar would melt in your mouth.
Oh Lisa, sweet Lisa, just look at the way you have grown.
Oh Lisa, dear Lisa, Oh, Lisa - my baby, my darling, my own.

Tennessee babe save your dimples for me, don't let a one get away
Oh Lisa, my darling, though you're only three you'll be a grand lady someday.
Oh Lisa, sweet Lisa, dear little rose of the South.
Oh Lisa, oh, Lisa, sugar would melt in your mouth.

The Green Leaves Of Summer
music by Dimitri Tiomkin, lyrics by Paul Francis Webster

A time to be reaping, a time to be sowing
The green leaves of summer are calling me home.
It was good to be young then, in the season of plenty,
When the catfish were jumping as high as the sky.

A time to be laughing, a time to be living,
A time to be courting a girl of your own.
'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,
And to stand by your wife at the moment of birth.

A time to be reaping, a time to be sowing
The green leaves of summer are calling me home.
'Twas so good to be young then, to be close to the earth,
Now the green leaves of summer are calling me home.

Mahalia Jackson's version adds this verse:

A time to be living, a time to be loving,
A time to be dreaming a dream of your own.
It was so good to be young then, to be learning to pray,
And to bless the good Lord for each wonderful day.

The Guns Of Navarone
Words by Paul Francis Webster, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

Islands of Greece are green and beautiful, green and beautiful
Where the olive trees grow
In the fields below,
But high on the cliffs the guns are hidden there, guns are hidden there
In a cavern of stone:
Guns of Navarone

There is another isle as beautiful
Where the laurel once bloomed,
Here on this island known as Kheros
Two thousand soldiers are doomed.
Now here is the problem: how to rescue them
From a brutal defeat
When high on the cliffs
The Guns of Navarone block His Majesty's Fleet?

Swift came the order from Intelligence: Top Priority -
Blow up the cavern of stone,
Guns of Navarone.
So in the face of odds impossible secret saboteurs
In a fisherman's skiff
Headed for the cliff.

Six men come to save two thousand men
Two thousand men, the brave and the bold
For whom the bells have tolled.
Six men come to scale the hills above
Here where the gods were,
Think what the odds were - six men!

Climber of mountains, Keith Mallory, Keith Mallory -
Not a mountain too high
For the human fly;
Stavrou the Greek who swore a solemn oath
on the blood of his wife;
Young Papademos, born in Soho, a handy man with a knife;
Corporal Miller, dean of chemistry, knows what chemicals mix;
Tough butcher Brown of Barcelona and Major Franklin make six!

Come to the sea with nitro glycerine, nitro glycerine
And a ladder of rope
And a thing called hope.

Six flies climb the Nazi spider web,
Carefully set the charge and the fuse,
So little time to loose!
Tick-tock, swiftly tick the hands of doom,
Everything reckoned,
Timed to the second - contact!

Spark and a boom and flames are going up, guns are blowing up;
Through the thundering roar
Steam the men of war.

Yassu, Godspeed to the gallant men, misson accomplished,
Farewell my friends,
And so the legend ends.
Farewell Miller, Brown and Mallory,
Young Papademos, Franklin and Stavrou, yassu, yassu.

[alternate verse for commercial release:
Yassu toll the bells of Navarone,
Safe be your journey, fair wind attend you, yassu, yassu.]

Now on the island green and beautiful
With the morn again
Hope is born again.
Free!
We shall be free!
Live and be free!
Free!
Free!

Yassu
Lyrics by Paul Francis Webster, Music by Dimitri Tiomkin

They say the Greeks could find a word for everything
Including tender words for lovers to use in spring.

Words oftentimes are tragic,
But they have one that's magic.

Don't say farewell, don't say goodbye,
Say something sweeter - don't make me cry.

There is a word that you can say -
Just whisper yassu and walk away.

Don't say farewell, don't say goodbye,
Just whisper yassu and so will I.

A parting smile, a kiss and then
If you say yassu we'll meet again.

I don't know all the words to the theme from "Red River", but here is what I DO know of it. It's called "Settle Down, Little Doggies":

Settle down, little doggies
This is home for tonight
Settle down, little doggies
We'll be travelin' soon as it's light.........

then there is a gap in what I know, until the last 2 lines:

Settle down, little doggies
For tonight you'd better settle down.

Wish I knew the lyrics in their entirety, but maybe this will help a little, and hopefully someone else will be able to fill in the rest. Good luck!
