Kevin Nowlan was a very good batman artist in the 90s too. Liked his style a lot.

Denys Cowan is my pick for most unheralded (Batman) artist of all time.

I never really thought of Cowan as a Batman artist. As I recall, he only drew a handful of Batman stories here and there and Batman whenever he guest starred while he was illustrating The Question. Which issues of his that he drew stand out to you? I will have to seek them out, as I enjoy his art.

See what happens when I drift outside my pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths "bubble"?

I suppose I was just smitten with Cowan's work on "Blind Justice" and wished he had done more.

It continually perplexes me that comic book topics are the only unpopular topics among stereotypically nerdy FSMers.

It's like you people don't read.

I bought The Complete Advwntures of Cholly and Flytrap, which has nice art, weird characters and great lettering by John Workman. It feels like it would be suitable in Heavy Metal. I think it's 30 years old or so.

You’re a hypocrite, Phelps! You haven’t even read a comic since that post last year!

You know what? He’s right. frown

After a four-issue vampire tale followed by the dopey, two-part, not-scripted-by-Conway "Colonel Blimp" misadventure, it's refreshing to read Batman #353, a Conway-scripted Joker story with Jose Luis Garcia Lopez art.

I really like this panel layout and art.

After over a year away from any “serious” comic reading, I’ve tentatively put a toe back in the olde comic boxes for a quick dip down memory lane.

When I was first (obsessively) reading comics circa 1979, my preferred books were DC (they still are). I especially loved the team up books Brave and the Bold (Batman and somebody) and the-then new Superman team ups, DC Comics Presents. I still like the “one and done” stories with the iconic Bats and Supes pairings with whomever DC thought to give some much-needed exposure.

For whatever reason, I never read the Batman-Superman team ups in the long-running World’s Finest. Probably because that book was more money, the price of which would have dented my “Slurpee” and candy money (during this time I always my bought comics at 7-11) of my meager allowance in 1979 ($2.00 a month—often less). I also disliked DC’s icons having to share their book with backup stories.

Also during this time, I was in a short-lived craze for Harvey Comics characters (Richie Rich, Hot Stuff, Casper), so that also cut into my dough.

Anyway, been reading some Brave and the Bold and enjoying the Jim Aparo art and often insane Bob Haney writing, though Cary Burkett brought some nice stories into the mix once Haney was out.

Groo by Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones has been consistently great for 30+ years. It never fails to make me smile.

Nice. I know all too well the conflict of having to choose between a comic versus slurpee. Usually the slurpee won. I recently acquired this collection which I am hoping to read soon:

While I would love an omnibus (don’t you have digital versions?), I already have so many Brave and the Bold back issues—and Bats and Supes comics in general— that I’ll just stick with those (same goes for my Master of Kung Fu comics).

Yes, I have the digital version of this. My copy isn't the omnibus, but a smaller, more affordable collection. It still has a decent page length, as it is close to 500 pages long. It would be neat to have the originals, as that reading experience can't be beat.

Back in ‘78-‘79, I could never afford the “large” Slurpees, which as you remember, came in the plastic cups—often with a DC (or Marvel) character emblazoned on it! It was only 12 years ago that I learned that even the most obscure characters got on a Slurpee cup! It makes my youthful heartbreak all the more poignant now!
