Don't have this Barry score, though I've been crying out for a reissue for some time. I've never seen the film, is there much music in it that isn't included on the Varese CD, which I believe has a short runtime?

This was a Club release, and amazing to me that it is one of only two they ever did (the other being Hanover St).

The Jagged Edge album is about 30 minutes and is arranged as two long suites.

I do love the score, but because it is very monothematic / monostylistic throughout; and because the music on the album is not identified by scene, I honestly cannot remember if there is any more music in the film than the album. I suspect not to be honest.

I did have this very rare club CD release and then some bastard stole it. These were the days long before ripping safety copies of your CDs.

Thankfully, my friends who knew I owned a copy helped me out with a CD-R substitute.

But I'm hoping Varese will do it as an Encore title one of these days so I can have the CD again proper.

It must be 25 years since that Varese CD came out...

Cheers

I was travelling the world at the time and didn't even know it had a CD release until far too late.

I enjoy the score and would more than welcome a re-release.

Me, too: I'd love to replace my (excellent) CDr. One cue was included on the 4CD box set Themependium - which sounds that much cleaner than my CDr version.

I've seen the film a few times (now disposed of the DVD) and whilst it's far from great, it is enjoyable. Is it Mr. Barry's best score? No, not even close, but it does its job well and, better, it does present an enjoyable listening experience away from the visuals.

I don't think he was proficient in electronic music, there are many other more capable film composers, but Barry did produce a highly listenable work which varies between the shock/horror - in an exceedingly tuneful manner, unlike those many other more capable film composers, and partnered this with a truly beautiful simple melody - solo piano - which tells you that it is not all horror and that underlying the drama are human beings.

I find this to be one of Barry's most distinct and unusual scores. He composed very few outright thriller scores and I don't believe anything as hard-edged as this. The killer's arrival (mounting the staircase) riff is one of the most unsettling pieces of film music I've ever heard. I'm serious: all the Chris Young, Marco Beltrami, Brian Tyler, even Herrmann doesn't come close to unnerving me like this particular theme. And the love theme is so infused with dark tragedy and menace, despite being fragile and beautiful. I think this may be the most underrated Barry score and, admittedly, does take a few listens to find the gold in it. But it works just perfectly with the film, which is a classic 80's popcorn thriller, one of the few decent ones that Joe Eszterhas was responsible for.
