Regarding Saturn 3, it's definitely not as "accessible" for the masses. It's a complex and beautiful thing. I think I've listenend to it 50 times since Intrada released it.
Boy, Slipstream is absolute tripe (the movie I mean) the score is good but way too big for the movie. It's almost as though Bernstein was trying to do something - anything - to amuse himself. It'd make a great CD though!
I still have yet to hear SLIPSTREAM, but I agree that SPACEHUNTER & SATURN 3 are great companion pieces to HEAVY METAL. You might also check out SPIES LIKE US since it is from the same time frame and features large-scale, kinetic and thematic orchestral action/adventure.

I believe everything that has been said about the movie itself (haven't seen it yet - doesn't Bill Paxton -one of my alltime favourite supporting cast actors- star in it?) but the music really is grand. One can only imagine how the great composers were able to deliver fantastic music for horrible films.

With none less than F Murray Abraham and Ben Kingsley in smaller appearances. (I maintain that the movie has one of the best casts I've ever seen. Its just that the movie is better suited as Mystery Science Theater fodder.)
