I refer you to MikeJ's post on the Charlton Heston thread. A perfectly innocent avatar, to be sure, when talking about film music, but hardly appropriate to accompany a post that starts: "I can't articulate my grief over hearing this news."

Not a dig about that one poster in particular, incidentally...

I'm just happy they can be turned off.

I've kept them on up to now, I suppose to try to see the attraction.

You get pictures of Morricone next to posts about Goldsmith and vice versa, hilarity smileys in tandem with eulogies for dead celebrities...

Much better without them, in my opinion.

Personally, I like them. A good way to identify certain users (and yourself) when you're skimming through long threads looking for a particular post.

I don't mind them.

That's right. In a long thread, avatars make it much easier to scan for posts by the writers you "have time for right now."

Ya know, I didn't think about the avatar until after I saw my post... and while it might not be appropriate, by the time you get to the end of my post, there is cause to be happy.

I'm glad we have the avatars. It helps give the board some personality.

I don't care for avatars at all, but I especially hate animated ones. It's very distracting trying to read text while something is moving in the corner of your eye.

There's a bit of a grumpy old man vibe going on here!

I use this avatar in various forums. I think it suits me. It also celebrates one of my favourite artists, Lin Streeter.

The point has already been made that it's easier to locate your own and others' posts; a major advantage.

There's almost no downside to avatars except disagreeing with individuals' choices of pictures.

The main problem is that in the context of THIS forum, because there's no other info like post count, etc., that most other forums have, the avatars really stick out. So it really does look kinda ugly.
Other forums they kinda blend in with the scenery as it were...

(of course, since we have people regularly quoting large pictures for no reason, I guess most others don't really care. Odd that on a forum about music people wouldn't care about aesthetics)

To those with the animated ones--Please DO
turn them off. It's highly distracting to
scroll down through a bunch of repeated
avatars blinking, jumping, shooting, etc.

I do remember you folks from your name, you
know. Alzheimers hasn't gone that far yet!

I turned them off post haste.

You can't say no to Kerr Avon. You just can't. It's just a shame that I can't convert the file properly.

Avatars are not to be taken seriously (unless, I suppose, they are particularly offensive). I have a disturbing picture of a shirtless older William Shatner. This is no reflection on anything other than I find the picture amusing.

Rarely does an avatar reflect the posts written.

So it is appropriate to post something you find "disturbing" as your associated image is it? I found it amusing the 1st time but not the 31st.

Thank god these wretched things can be turned off. Their only value is revealing the mental age of posters. smile

This thread is a riot. Some good laughs here.
