how's your edit? just curious...

Still tinkering with it a bit. Once I'm done, I'll be happy to post my playlist order.

@ spielboy- Here's my fan edit. With so many short tracks it was hard to create a balanced flow. I took out more than I expected, but remained with a decent 46 minute run. (Some omitted cues are quite nice but they slowed things down to much.)

After the opening titles the playlist sort of flows in quarters from quieter cues to action cues alternating between sections. I liked the choral version of "Edge of the World". There's really is no good place for this but I put it near the beginning since the non choral version ends the album. Also included the bonus track of "Winner None" in order to add some excitement in the front half.

(1) War Games
(2) Home Movie
(3) A Game Of Chess?
(4) Nuclear Alert
(5) "Edge Of The World" (Choral Version)
(6) Norad
(7) It Could Be War
(8) Confidence Is High
(9) [Bonus Track] Winner None (Original Version)
(10) David's Concern
(11) Off To See Faulken
(12) WOPR
(13) Maneuvers
(14) Faulken's House
(15) "I Can't Swim"
(16) Helicopter Pursuit & Launch Detected
(17) Closing The Mountain
(18) Joshua!
(19) It Might Be Real
(20) Tic Tac Toe
(21) Winner None
(22) End Credits
(23) [Bonus Track] "Edge Of The World"

I find this a classic listen in the sense that it brings the movie to life in your head, if you want to engage it that way.

Or it also serves as a good listening experience for a suspense-thriller listening session that serves up varying moods while you're getting something else done.

Good all-around soundtrack experience, its got parts with intense motive development, and some breezy and emotional passages that make it a well-rounded score.

Very well said! I also 'kind of' enjoyed this, but was put off by certain things.
After reading the notes, living with the disc more, its really grown on me.
And that end title, oy.....love it, has been added to a list of recent favorites.
It must be that harmonica - what a strange but perfect choice!

My only complaint about the Intrada release is that we don't get the wonderful research montage cue without lyrics as it plays in the film.

I just discovered there was a 2-CD promo compilation of Rubinstein's work released some years ago on SuperTracks. It features several cues from WARGAMES. Does anyone know if the film version of the research montage cue is on it?

Exactly. The version of that cue on the Intrada album features lyrics and a vocal not in the movie.

I have/had it but don't think that cue is on there. I could be totally wrong, but I remember that being the reason why everyone was so mad about the Intrada version because there was no CD alternative.

There was a discussion over on Intrada's forum about "History Lesson" when they released WarGames.

It has some good insight from Doug about the history of this song.

Whenever I want just the instrumental version, I take out my left earbud. It's instrumental only on the right, though some detail is lost (there are instruments on the left channel, not just the vocal).

Thing is, I've come to just love the song! Though I gotta say, if they re-released it with the addition of an instrumental-only version of History Lesson, I'd buy it.

Fascinating, thanks! Sounds like the final film version involved some derring do in the editing room that won't be replicated. While I totally understand Doug's (and Rubinstein's) position I will still pine after a clean version of the film cue. C'est la vie and whatnot.

Somebody has uploaded a really clean version with no vocals. It's not exactly the same as the film version, but it's as close as we're gonna get.
