1776 didn't need direction, because practically everybody knew their roles inside and out.

You might want to rephrase this comment, Morricone, since you can't possibly believe that a film director's job is strictly confined to bringing out good performance from the actors!

Good point. 1776's cast didn't need direction because they had played their parts for quite awhile and got them down pat. Both dirtector's added little to the proceedings cinematically. But Hunt did a better job of preserving the play by casting most of the original players.

I completely disagree, as you know. The Music Man is perfectly cast down to the smallest bit player. There was no one on the planet then or now who could be more perfect that Paul Ford and Hermione Gingold, Pert Kelton, of course, created her role, Ronny Howard was excellent, the Buffalo Bills came from the B'way production, Robert Preston came from B'way, Shirley Jones was perfection, Buddy Hackett was just fine as Marcellus, blah, blah, blah.

As to the direction, Da Costa's is simple, to the point, and always shows you what you need to see - for what it is, it's exemplary. Hunt, on the other hand, is at sea, lost, awkward, never understanding the mechanics of film.

OK which will come first, a restored Porgy or an expanded MM soundtrack CD. It's been long enough in both cases. I want every scintilla of music in the Maaaaaaaaaaaaaa-rian scene. I WANT IT NOW!!!!!

Agreed! I'm actually mixed on The Music Man film/show as a whole, but that Marian the Librarian scene is magic.

For what it's worth, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra recording of the score (mentioned in passing several pages and years ago on this thread) does have a truncated version of the film's 'Marian', with a Timothy Noble as Harold Hill. The track doesn't include the initial underscored 'marbles' scene, and there are a few bars cut out of the dance break, but it's a decent recording nevertheless. I don't know of another album which has this specific music, but there may be others around. (There's also at least one Broadway revival cast recording with the stage version of 'Marian' including the dance break, but the dance break is a bit different in the stage version.)
The Cincinnati recording also includes a counterpoint version of 'My White Knight'/'The Sadder But Wiser Girl', for those who are into that sort of thing, as many on this thread seem(ed) to be.
