There seems to be a rather large fire raging at Universal right now:

Hope nobody gets hurt.

Yup. Just saw this on tv. According to the segment, it is the site where "King Kong" and "War of the Worlds" has been shot.

A video vault was destroyed as well. Now that we've taken care of the most important matter, which is making sure no one's been hurt, we can then start hoping nothing of importance got lost.

"The blaze also destroyed the courthouse square from "Back to the Future," officials said."

That´s a real shame. LeHah. One of my favorite movies of all time.

Update on the nature of the damage to the vault:

"Roughly 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels were damaged in the vault, but there were duplicates stored in a different location, NBC Universal President and Chief Operating Officer Ron Meyer said.

"Nothing is lost forever," Meyer said."

Glad to hear there apparently wasn't much, if anything, lost from the vault being destroyed.

Isn't this the third time Courthouse Square has been ravaged by fire? I remember it was destroyed once before in the early-90s, and I thought it had another fire 5-6 years ago. It's also used as the primary set on GHOST WHISPERER, so they'll probably have it rebuilt in no time over the summer.

My biggest concern (again, after we learned that everyone was okay, which always comes first) was that since Universal's TV library, in terms of what would be available for use today in repeats or on future DVD releases, would be stored on videotape masters, that these would have been put at risk (more so than the classic movies).

If they have a halfway decent disaster recovery policy in place, nothing in the vaults should be lost forever.

And of course, they didn't. Basic record and archival maintenance seems to be beyond these corporations. A little more effort would have made these losses retrievable.

What I have been trying to do is read between the lines to figure out if Universal was saying they already had duplicates of the video reels elsewhere *already transferred from the negative* so that if for instance (1) the video transfers for "Adam-12" Season 2 that were just licensed out to Shout! for release on 9/30 were lost then (2) is there another existing set of transfers Shout! could just use OR (3) does Universal have to make a new set of transfers from the film negatives before anything can happen? Or was the reference to duplicates just a reference to the fact that the negatives were unaffected and that is their "duplicate"?

Who knows, Eric? I'm also concerned
about the upcoming NIGHT GALLERY
2nd season release, and how this
incident is going to affect it and
the possibility of other classic
Uni tv shows from getting released,
or even if it's going to affect any
dvd releases at all. It's very annoying
that we're not getting any staight
answers yet.

I've e-mailed Gord Lacey at TV Shows on DVD twice and he thinks the answer is that (1) the loss of this vault did not mean the loss of things Universal would have elsewhere for DVD transfer and that (2) the planned release schedule should not be affected.

I'd have felt a lot more secure if we were one month past the announce date on "Adam-12" rather than two days because by then, there should have been no doubt of Shout! having the elements in their possesion already.

I made a couple posts on Shout's board but good luck waiting for a response on that, as the only guy with them who ever checks in posts on average about once in a blue moon.

Of course if Universal hadn't been so inept with releasing their TV library in the first place, then by this point almost *all* of the important series would have been finished by now and yesterday's catastrophe wouldn't have meant anything in that regard. Given with what they started in 04-05, Universal SHOULD have been finished by now with "Night Gallery", "Dragnet", "Adam-12", "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Hardy Boys" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" should have been at about S6 or 7 by now.

Yeah, but there's a lot of their back
catalog of classic shows that haven't had
any releases yet. Four of my favorite
Universal shows haven't seen the light
of day yet - IT TAKES A THIEF, SWITCH,
THRILLER, THE SIXTH SENSE. A bunch of one-
season-only shows like ELLERY QUEEN,
GET CHRISTIE LOVE and many others
still need a release.

Yeah, I'd have to say the worst possible news would be for the more obscure Universal shows that were still on tape transfers from 80s and 90s cable repeats. Late 50s and early 60s Universal shows that have been licensed to Timeless like "Arrest And Trial" and "Checkmate" are another matter because those are put together from collectors 16mm prints.

Because "Adam-12" and "Dragnet" still have a viable life on cable even now, I think it's more likely existing duplicates are available to let any work on those shows proceed and if we can just get those two done, those will be the most important victories as far as Universal material goes from my standpoint.

Finish the stalled ones first!! smile (And then for the unstarted ones, I'd want "Ellery Queen" next).

Of course if Universal had always followed CBS/Paramount's policy of going back to the original elements then yesterday's news wouldn't have mattered either. But even when Universal does these titles themselves, they like to cut corners by using old transfers. The last two season releases of "Emergency!" look absolutely awful, S4 in particular with dirt, scratches and all signs that make you think they were still using 16mm prints.

Someone mentioned Alfred Hitchcock Presents. When, in the name of all that is holy, is the next friggin' season coming out? Has it been announced yet?
