“Dino” (1957) stars Sal Mineo (1939-1976) as “Dino Minetta”, another in the popular “juvenile delinquent” problem films of the late Fifties. (See my previous posts on “The Young Savages”, “Crime in the Streets” (also written by Reginald Rose, author of “Dino”), “Hot Blood/The Wild One”, etc.) Dino, a young teenager is released from reform school for his complicity in a gang killing. Local social worker (Brian Keith) tries to help him adjust and deal with his abusive father. But Dino wants his old gang life back until he falls in love with a local girl and sees that his younger brother is headed down his same criminal path.

The story was originally broadcast on CBS-TV’s popular “Studio One” on January 2, 1956. Indeed, Mineo was nominated for an Emmy for his performance. The popular show was then turned in to the current film. Tragically, Mineo was murdered outside his apartment in Los Angeles on February 12, 1976.

Gerald Fried (1928- ) scored the film. It was issued on a 12” Epic LP (Epic LN-3404 –mono), See picture below. Fried has composed many film scores to include “Paths of Glory” and “Too Late the Hero” and TV episodes for, “Shotgun Slade” and “Riverboat”. He later wrote scores for episodes of “The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Gilligan's Island”, “Star Trek“, “Mission: Impossible”, “Family Affair” and he collaborated with Quincy Jones for “Roots”. FSM has issued several CDs with Fried’s music, including a two CD set with several of his “B” horror film scores, “The Return of Dracula.” (http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm?ID=1712).

"Dino" is a wonderful score. It reminds me of Fried's outstanding Kubrick scores.

It says on the cover "Music Editor - Eve Newman".

Is this another member of the film music Newman family ?

I just scored a copy of this. I haven't cleaned it yet. Judging from the track titles and liner notes, it sounds like it has some nervous jazz potential. Is that accurate?

Super, I cannot deny the vinyl attraction.

This was recently released on disc with CRIME IN THE STREETS. I'm not sure about the legitimacy.

"Here’s a genre that needs to be revisited! Back in the 1950s a ton of “teenage movies” about rebellion, gangs, drugs, romance and juvenile delinquency came out. Ah! The good old days!!

It's a vinyl transfer based on the British 50-year-copyright rule.

I remember seeing an obscure film starring Sal Mineo way back in the seventies on late night TV called "Who Killed Teddy Bear" (1965).....I've never forgotten the theme song which was
composed by Charles Calello........does anyone know if a soundtrack was ever released ?

Thanks.

What's weird is iTunes splits into two albums. Look closely at album covers.
