David: Didn't really enjoy your Christmas score stuff on the FSM podcast a year or so ago, and don't agree at all with your Dark Knight opinions. I agree with Andrew on this: Solid score, solid film.

And if anyone's interested, Ebert gave Babe: Pig in the City four stars as well (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/19981125/REVIEWS/811250301/1023); he also rated it number 7 on his own Top 10. Wonderfully enough, he rated the under appreciated Dark City at number 1. I just finished watching the Director's Cut of that film and I'm still astonished at its craftmanship, set design, and cinematography. The Director's Cut is a step-up for a film that didn't particularly need one.

For those who haven't seen the sequel to Babe -- or its original -- I suggest you seek them both out. Another reason why it's so very unfortunate they don't craft children's films like these two; I think the closest we've come is Wall-E.

Dark City is garbage. It's pretty to look at, but it's hollow. If that's your thing than Terry Gilliam is more recommended. And I find Ebert to be far too contradictory to be, well, trusted.

You saw a studio cut in theaters.

I understand the criticism against the TDK score but I found it quite emotional. "Agent of Chaos" is a terrific cue - the tension is palatable.

OK, I still have yet to see the film, but I did pick up the album yesterday at Amoeba. Now, I loved the film BATMAN BEGINS, but it was really not until a year later that I came to enjoy most of the album, finding some of it too ambient but there was still good stuff there. Now I've been reading the comments here for the past few weeks about THE DARK KNIGHT score, listened to some short clips and liked them and now that I working my through the album, I have to say that I REALLY like this score a great deal. There is more of a Howard presence here than in BB and I like Zimmer's modifications to his initial thematic and rhythmic material. "Harvey Two-Face" is a wonderful track, as are "Blood On My Hands", "Like a Dog Chasing Cars", "A Little Anarchy" and "Watch The World Burn". I even really found the sound design aspect of "Why So Serious" very engaging. I didn't know quite what to expect at all, especially since I've not seen the film, and am surprised at how much this works for me.... I'm sure I'll love the film too!

I actually like A Dark Knight which is kind of a more electronic version of Zimmer's themes put into a long track. Makes good walking with iPod music. I found it a little too editorial like in the film but I do like what Zimmer did with it musically. Oh gosh, I'm actually complimenting Zimmer.

Hey, I never thought I'd be saying the same thing either! smile But after being impressed with his PIRATES and DA VINCI scores, my perspective on the man and music changed.

So, I take it from reading here that much of the music on THE DARK KNIGHT album is not in the film?

This is a fairly ancient thread I know but saw the Dark Knight soundtrack at the library & decided to give it a listen. I for the most part enjoyed the score when I watch the movie but I've never listened to this or any of the recent Batman soundtracks on cd. I wanted to see how it played separate from the film.

Honestly, & this is after only one complete listen, I felt like I'd been assaulted. The constant drums, the screeching noises, & what sounds like thunder just left me feeling like I'd been mugged. I guess with it being a Batman film that's appropriate but it isn't a score I'd listen to very often. It fits the film well, sometimes exceptionally so, but it's not very musical at least to my ears. I'm going to give it a 2nd listen & maybe try Dark Knight Rises since it's also at the library. This score just wasn't for me. A lot of atmospheric sounds but not pleasing music to listen to.

TDK does NOT make for a great lsitening 'sperience on cd.

TDKR, on the other hand, is great in the film and on cd. The best score of 2012!

Folks, his name is Gene Siskel.

And Babe: Pig in the City was the best film of '98 (IMHO). I often wonder how many people have actually seen it.

I did.
you, on the other hand did nOT, Gene Jr. !

I actually feel just the opposite. To me, TDK is a decent action soundtrack and TDKR is a big, lumbering mess of bombast. Just like Man of Steel, the few enjoyable parts of TDKR work better on album than in the film. Both films are just horribly spotted and often get buried under insanely loud and completely inappropriate noise. This isn't always the case, mind you, just in some scenes.

Agreed. TDK is superior to TDKR on CD. Though to be fair an embarrassingly significant portion of TDKR is lifted note for note from TDK... completely unoriginal material.

I checked out DKR today. Only listened to a bit but again I think this music plays better in the movie & not on cd. Listening to DK, I couldn't even remember what scene a certain piece was from. It was just constant pounding.

I'm not knocking these scores because paired with the films, they're pretty exciting.
