Just scribbling notes down really...

Does anybody remember this 70's film?

I was looking through and listening to some sample tracks from the cd album "David Shire At The Movies" and stumbled on the theme song "I'll Never Say Goodbye" from "The Promise".

All these memories clicked in my brain as I remembered watching this film as a youngster with family on the GRAND (literally!) Radio City Music Hall in N.Y.C. which was followed by a spectacular show of some kind with the famous Rockettes of course included in the show and with that unique and awesome Radio City grandeur of things as it was usually done in those good old days. I don't know if they still screen movies at Radio City followed by shows. The whole spectacle was a wonderful way to spend one's day which must have lasted more than four hours or so.

I don't think I have seen the movie since but I do remember a few scenes vaguely. It was not the greatest of films but it must have been memorable for me to still have images in my mind. I was very young. I had no idea that the score was by David Shire and that it's theme song was nominated for an oscar.

That year 1979... and what a year of great movies, "Norma Rae" an excellent movie, won an oscar for best song "It Goes Like It Goes" which was also composed by David Shire. Sally Field's performance in "Norma Rae" was brilliant and her oscar as best actress well deserved. BTW, "Kramer vs. Kramer" won best picture.

In this year our beloved Jerry Goldsmith was nominated once more for his great film score, "Star Trek - The Motion Picture". George Delerue picked up the oscar for best score from his "A Little Romance".

It seems that quite a substantial number of Shire film scores have not been released or were released on LP and have not yet on cd.

"The Killer Bees"... smile

I guess "The Promise" is one and "Norma Rae" as well. This man has written some classic film scores to some classic films. "The Conversation" for example, a favorite Shire score of mine along with another "Pelham 1-2-3".

Even though I remember the movie, I cannot recall the score from "The Promise". Is it too short to make it on a single cd all by itself? Perhaps it could be combined with another Shire score.

I would like to see "The Promise" released anyway just for memory lane's sake.

In any case, we'll see what our favorite record labels have in store for us.

A gooey romance, gorgeously photographed, perfect for its intended audience.

And Stephen Collins' dimples looked wonderful.

I remember a lot of the film cause I watched it over and over on cable back in 1980 or so. The music was a textbook version of how to do a song-driven score just right.

I have this on LP and would love to see a cd release someday.

I even have a video tape copy of the film that I made from HBO some while back. What can I say? I adore Kathleen Quinlan (and David Shire too for that matter).

There are an awfully lot worse or gooier films on DVD. Why can't this one be there for $5 in Walmart along with all the other crap? ;-)

It had as good a score as it could have from Mr. Shire and a super title song (sung in the film by Melissa Manchester by the way). I own the sheet music and the soundtrack LP as well.

I'm really more interested in a DVD of the film than a CD of the music right now, video tape really looks grainy, the LP is holding up just fine.

I have the sheet music too. I'm proud that with my grindingly rudimentary piano skills I was able to get through the measures up to the vocal. I was amazed at how many elements of the score I could hear in those measures.

There's an interesting thread - what commercially released sheet music do you have from films. Someone go start it and I'll post ad nauseum.

THE PROMISE is a wonderful Shire score for a fairly soapy film. I originally paired this with
THE HINDENBERG in a personal LP-2-CD cleanup, now obsolete with the great Intrada release of HINDENBERG.

This is an openly emotional score, sporting the superb Melissa Manchester vocal of the theme song, "Just Say Goodbye." (Something about which one can truely say they just don't write 'em like this anymore.)

I have about 6 feet of either commercial sheets or xeroxed stuff from friends. All the way back to 10 COMMANDMENTS and forwards to JNH or Goldsmith or Williams. I'm a pianist and really like to collect the piano versions.

My favorites are the Warner Brothers Classic Flm Scores series, mostly arranged by Tony Esposito. Some of them are a little to hard for me to play, but it's fun to try. I first begain collecting film music sheet music with WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, which I still have, and a book of solos from BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.

After all these years, still no CD release of the MCA album or the original tracks from the movie (assuming there is more music in the film itself, as I have never had the chance to actually see it - the film seemed to have a limited release in the UK and - to my knowledge - has never been shown on TV over here.)

It's a beautiful work from David Shire; one of his best, and that's saying something!

Hasn't Intrada been doing a lot of former-MCA-releases?

Look up Leonard Maltins review in his book, hysterical. I think its a film so bad that its good.
I think Beatrice Straight is terrific in it and the score is good.

Like this movie way back when... loved the score. I was a big fan of Melissa Manchester and was happy she sang the title tune! Still have the vinyl LP too.

Another blast from the past. smile
