Sorry if this has come up before: One of my favorite David Raksin scores is "What's the Matter with Helen?". I have the 1975 (Dynamation DY 1200) grey-market lp with passable sound. Wondering if any of you know if decent elements exist that could be used for a potential CD release? I've been living with a home CD transfer and an upgrade would be wonderful.

For his classes Raksin played a stereo recording of the main title, so it appears he did own at least that portion (if not the entire score) on tape. Since his papers and recordings appear to have gone to the Library of Congress, it might be worth looking to see if they have an online catalog, and see if his collection has an inventory there.

I have the film on DVD but don't remember the score at all. I'll have to revisit it.

The LP is a bit of a joke - I know where those tapes came from and they did not contain the main saxophone overlays, which is why the main title has no TUNE.

Confession -- I've never watched the film! "Private Parts" (Friedhofer) is in that same league for me -- I know the LP suite but not the film. So it is good to know about the missing overlays. Thanks Bruce! Makes me wonder how many scores that I think I "know" are only, at best, fragmented representations -- due to lapses of memory, incomplete or error-ridden recordings, and, of course, drastic edits made in final release versions of the films themselves.

Did a quick music search using the LOC engine -- and their new Beta search -- lots of Laura recordings and about 80 misc. items (movies and a bunch of James Mason shows). Nothing yet popped up about "Helen". I haven't found a direct link to a "Raksin" collection -- although there are numerous Google references about the collection being formed at the LOC. Looking at lists I see that Raksin scored "Sh! the Octopus" (1937) -- I just DVR'd and transferred it a while ago to DVD. Gotta watch that one now!

I would love a release of this. I've always liked this movie.
