In an earlier thread on the upcoming John Morgan re-recording of Steiner's Charge of the Light Brigade, WILLIAMDMCCRUM remarked as follows:

It's like the Gerhardt series all over again, except this time, it's the whole scores. I always felt that that RCA series would make a great benchmark of scores to be totally recorded. So for example, if there's a score that had a Gerhardt suite but doesn't have a re-recording or at least an OST release, there ought to be rioting in the streets until it becomes a reality.

In fact, it would make a great thread here to list all those scores and discuss how many have become a reality in terms of OST releases or re-recordings since.

Here's the start of that thread. Here are the Gerhardt RCA recordings and the expanded (though not always complete) original soundtracks and re-recordings that have made it to CD since those LPs were originally issued.

It's pretty amazing how many of those titles are available now, but most certainly were not 35 years ago when Gerhardt and company started that series. smile

Didn't some of the music from KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES make it onto one of the BERNARD HERRMANN AT FOX CDs from Varese?

You are correct. About 13 minutes are on Varese Sarabande VSD 302-066-053. That's considerably more than the 3 minutes on the Gerhardt disc. I've made the change.

Only the Alfred Newman and David Raksin albums seem to have had expanded releases of all of their scores. Of course, the Raksin album only HAD three scores.

Bob ... thanks a million. You've saved a lot of research there! Thanks for the effort.

It shows I think that there are still benchmark scores that could be approached by new producers reasonably 'safely' in terms of a good wide response and a return on the investment.

I have a copy of Varese Sarabande's release of the complete score (re-recording) to THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, VSD-5696 ca. 1998. It's the Munich Symphony Orchestra with Carl Davis as conductor. Is this a reissue of the Bay Cities CD release? Very cool list, BTW- thanks for doing it!

Nothing to add, but good thread! Enquiring minds want to know these things.

I have NOW VOYAGER and SUNSET BOULEVARD. I also have the Gerhardt LP of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, but I don't play LPs anymore.

I currently only have ONE Gerhardt CD and that's the Bogart one. I'm not the biggest fan of it and rarely play it (mostly because I'm not too keen on Max Steiner), but from the list above, it looks like it is the one with the most tracks from otherwise unreleased scores(?). So maybe I should just hang on to it just a little bit longer.

Really, Thor? I would have thought the Gerhardt recordings were right up your alley, especially the Rozsa and Waxman compilations...

They are! It's just that I'm no big fan of Steiner's. With my newfound appreciation of compilations, I may very well be returning to the Gerhardt CD's soon.

I think you'll be quite pleased, they are extremely well-selected and intelligently programmed. While the sonics could be slightly improved on the Dolby Surround mixes, they sound on the whole is quite good, and those performances are just expert.
