WPIX also meant Yankees baseball, and also the on-air editorials by Richard Hughes that would end, "What's your opinion? We'd like to know." Yankee baseball ruined many a Saturday evening of my childhood, the way it would invariably run into overtime, causing WPIX to "now join Star Trek, already in progress."

(Do you remember the call-in game they had in the early 80s, where it was missile command and the only way to fire missiles was to say PIX into the phone?) TV Pix on 11 Alive! Brought to you by Matell Intellivision! What goofy fun that was. I loved watching these kids try to out think the dude on the other end of the phone by saying "pix pix pix pix" really really fast. And the announcer was hilarious. "Pixth!" Bloop - misses by a mile. "Ohhh, so close!" When they stopped doing TV Pix, the hour long Tom and Jerry bloc was never the same again. Yankee baseball ruined many a Saturday evening of my childhood, the way it would invariably run into overtime, causing WPIX to "now join Star Trek, already in progress." HAH! YESS! This used to drive me to insane rages as a kid. It's because of this I have absolutely no use for sports, to this day. God, this brings back a wealth of memories. Most of my good feelings of childhood come from the TV of the time. And WPIX was my preferred channel back then, they had all the shows I liked. Even in later High School years, I would stay up til 2 am just to catch the late night offering of: "Coming up next on 11 Alive: Space:1999!" Oh man, as much as I love having my shows on DVD, it was so much more fun waiting for it and seeing it when it was a treat. The line up for a time was grand: Starting at 11 (I think) The Honeymooners, then Star Trek and, finally, The Odd Couple. TV was fun then.

Thanks for posting this Eric. I remember the WPIX Yule Log mostly from the early 70's when I was a kid. My father died a few months before Christmas 1972 when I was 9, and I remember my family still trying to make it a nice Christmas for all of us and the WPIX Yule Log on the tv was a big part of opening gifts early Christmas morning that year. As a youngster, I always enjoyed the opening music to the program each year on PIX. Christmas 1972 was really a tough one for us, but I do remember trying to make is special. Jim, do you remember our November trip to Rich's Hobby up in Montville/Pine Brook? We bought kits to make our own ornaments, and then spent hours at mom's kitchen table doing puzzles, making ornaments, and listening to mom's holiday albums.....Andy Williams and Mitch Miller....and singing along (well, I did!) I still watch that Yule Log, and my husband and I share the same old stories of when we were kids. Great tradition! Enjoy! Donna

Those ornaments had tons of little pins with little plastic jewels attached to each that you had to press in to the plain styrofoam Christmas ornaments to form a pattern. I guess a guide came with those to show you what the ornament should look like after it was finished. Our sister Joyce always had the patience for doing those, and she was very good at it! She's good at lot's of things. I don't think you can buy that stuff anymore, but those are some great family memories Sis. Thanks for sharing here.
