This box set is a treasure, and when it does go out of print, with only 1500 copies around, it will truly be a real and valuable collector's item.
I hope those who are sitting on the fence about this release will go ahead and make that purchase. You will be rewarded musically, with great variety, AND it really IS a great deal. Not only is it fabulous, classic filmmusic, but it's on 5 discs, making them only $12 apiece!!! Whatta deal!!!
Thus Spake Manderley almost ten years ago. Santa has asked me if I want this for Christmas, and my immediate reaction was "Yes!", but later on I started worrying if I should have suggested that I'd prefer LAND OF THE GIANTS or THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD instead.
Not that this thread should be all Me Me Me, but if you look at my profile, you'll see the kind of scores I love. Raksin for me is great, but nor all the time. I think that FOREVER AMBER is one of the best scores ever, as is his (unreleased) THE BIG COMBO, and stuff like THE BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. Love the obscure (unreleased) DR RENAULT'S SECRET too.
So while I was losing sleep over my "Yes" to Santa, I was wondering about whay I was losing sleep, and I came to the conclusion that I don't really love ALL of David Raksin's scores. Kritzerland's "Preminger at Fox" set was slightly unsatisfactory to my small-minded self, because although it was largely Raksin, I was kind of disturbed by the "not-serious-sounding" tracks - the song versions of "Slowly" and the multitude of source cues. Also Newman's "Street Scene" in whistling form on Mockridge's WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS. But the dramatic stuff from DAISY KENYON and WHIRLPOOL is all great, and I'm generally more a "post-1956" person.
Help me Obi-Wan. Seeing as you know me so well, will I be disappointed in this set? Thank you, and the brandy's behind the cistern in the bathroom.
